Not that this is crystal clear, but I believe the allegation is that Master Cecil is like unto a marmot, and the challenger feels kin to squid. So any relationship would be quite distant. Uh, yeah, strange is a good word. ---

Huh. I notice two things. First, he basically admires the Master (as who wouldn’t?), writing: “I had grown to think of myself and Cecil as spiritual frères d’plume together walking that thin razor-wire over the self-aggrandizing abyss,” etc. Second, he claims to have become estranged from Cecil as a result of anti-squid sentiments in TSD. Turning to the cited column, we find it was a staff report written (quite capably, I might add) by John Corrado, not Cecil. So there appears to be some confusion. Perhaps a lot of confusion. I think I’ll leave it at that. ---

The marmots (and humans) are more closely related to _sea cucumbers_ than to squids. ---
