I don’t think it’s a matter of choice. SAG, or some such organization, will not allow exact duplicate names within their membership, IIRC. I’m sure there are finer points to this rule that someone more knowledgable than I will explain shortly.

SAG does — thus “Mary Tyler Moore” (there was already a Mary Moore when she joined) and Michael J. Fox (not his actual middle initial, IIRC) – but this doesn’t cover David Bowie.
