The only home teams I’ve seen (Toledo Mudhens and Traverse City Beach Bums) are both on the Sports Illustrated list of [The Weirdest Minor League Team Names](https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2016/02/26/crazy-weird-minor-league-team-names).

As a note of clarification, the teams the OP is referring to ARE professional teams with players in the Mexican League earning up to around $84-90,000 a year. I just bring this up because one way to piss off a minor league baseball player is to not refer to them as a “professional”.

Is “semipro” still being used? I remember that term coming up regarding someone who had to give up his Olympic medals, but that was a _very_ long time ago.

Not in the context of the sorts of minor league baseball that’s been discussed in this thread, IME. Yeah, many of the players don’t get paid much, but they’re still considered to be in pro ball, I think.

Semi-pro baseball exists. There is the Frontier League here in the Midwest. Players make maybe a thousand bucks a month.

As near as I can figure out, the [Frontier League](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frontier_League) is considered a professional (if independent) minor league, rather than a semi-pro league. On the [history page of the Frontier League’s website](http://www.frontierleague.com/league/league-history/):

> [@](#):
>
> In the winter of 1992-1993, several men got together and decided to start an independent professional baseball league to serve the West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and southeast Ohio areas. They believed they could bring professional baseball to areas that would never have a chance of affiliated professional baseball coming to their communities. The seed was planted and they named their project The Frontier League.

Actual semi-pro baseball appears to be at an even lower level of play than that, such as [this semi-pro league](https://www.hometeamsonline.com/teams/default.asp?u=CSBL&s=baseball&p=about) located in the Chicago area. I’m not entirely sure what makes them “semi-pro” versus purely amateur; maybe it’s the fact that they allow former pro players to join.

I thought semi-pro just means it’s not a full time occupation. Frontier League players would not be able to support themselves on only their baseball salaries.

In the CSBL link you provided, they describe themselves as an amateur league. In fact, their bylaws state “The League is for amateurs and no players shall be paid to play.”

I don’t know that players in the Midwest League (which, unlike the Frontier League, is affiliated with MLB) necessarily make a whole lot more than that. As discussed upthread, many low-minor teams work with fans in their communities to provide housing for their players.

As for the CSBL, they don’t seem to be consistent in how they talk about themselves; their “About” page says: “The Chicago Suburban Baseball League, organized in 1983 as the Northwest Suburban League, is considered by many to be one of the best **semi-pro** (emphasis mine) baseball leagues in the nation.”

[Wikipedia lists a number of leagues that someone’s classified as semi-pro](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_organized_baseball_leagues#Semi-professional_baseball); I have no idea how accurate the list is, or what the real dividing lines are between independent low minors / semi-pro / adult amateur leagues.

We often go to see the [Worcester Bravehearts](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worcester_Bravehearts), classified as “a summer collegiate baseball team.” Not sure where that fits into the scenario. I would describe their play as Single A, at best.

We’re not near enough drivetime wise to any minor league action, so we make do with Cal Summerball in our local city park. Easy access; sit on the lawn, sneak in our own food, inexpensive beer, fun promotions. Occasionally we’ll see someone who turns out to be notable; CJ Cron, Matt Garza

Here in Lancaster we have the Lancaster jethawks whom I think won their league last year ,…they’ve been affiliated with the Mariners red Sox Diamondbacks and a few others

Got to see Cruz Jr play a few times Randy Johnson played here in a rehab stint I don’t know what prices are these days but the first 5 years or so season tickets were 200$…
