I was reading an article in the New York times about the Afghan earthquake. Apparently a lot of women aren’t getting rescued or getting medical care because the men won’t touch women who are strangers. I guess if it were ZPG Zealot you guys would be out of luck. ---

While I don’t wish her personal ill, she’s also a poster who gets little benefit of the doubt from me about something like ending up in the ER due to online criticism here. Is it possible? Absolutely. But from a poster known for getting defensive and also for commonly exaggerating? Also absolutely Boy who Cried Wolf territory ---

She’s still reading. Hasn’t posted in two days, but was seen an hour ago. I certainly don’t want her to have a health crisis. I don’t even want to “run her off the board”. But the pit is provided so that you have a place to vent about stupid/evil things people have said. At some time or another just about anyone here can be on the giving or the receiving end of it. For someone to claim to be so emotionally fragile that you _must_ walk on eggshells and _never_ give pushback on the things that they say is pretty problematic. I don’t stalk her, I never even open a thread started by her if I see that she is the OP and mostly just scroll right past her posts in threads without interacting with her at all. But she was directly interacting with me in the thread that caused me to bump this pit thread. Let’s examine that more closely: 1.) OP asks 1.) Where are these flies coming from 2.) How can I stop them from coming back 3.) How can I kll them. 2.) I and other people ask what type of flies they are. 3.) Beck asks why someone would need to know what kind of fly you have, just hit them once or twice with a fly swatter. 4.) I explain that knowing what kind of fly have matters because it helps answer the OPs questions and explain why. (I mentally add a “you moron” at the end, strongly consider finishing the sentence in the pit thread then, and decide to let it go.) 5.) She doubles down with “you don’t kneed to know what you have”. Which is the polar opposite of trying to help the OP with their questions about where they come from and how to prevent them from coming back. It is saying that the OPs questions don’t even matter: flies iz flies, just hit 'em with a stick. That overcame my reluctance to bring it to the pit from the first anti-helpful comment. Would I feel bad that my bump of the pit thread precipitated her abandoning her emotional outlet entirely? Yes, a little. Do I regret calling her out on her bullshit? No, I don’t. She doesn’t get to be the one single poster on this board that has to be treated like she can do no wrong out of fear of brusing her ego. ---

I like Beck as a person, but not as a poster in a thread where someone needs correct information. My advice for her would be to wait a day before jumping into a thread. See if other people who have more experience with the problem have answered the question, and by then the issues will be more defined. I have a friend who just HAS to jump into any discussion. Someone’s giving a review of a new restaurant? He’s got to interrupt, to mention minor reasons why he’ll probably never go there. Well, I had two or threads about bands/musicians where some dork came in and posted something like “who the fuck are you talking about?”, and it was modded as threadshits. That’s comparable to the post about the restaurant the poster never has heard of. ---

Heh, when I sat for 30 minutes or so while our waiter sat at an adjacent booth and talked with his friends before taking our order and our food was brought out cold, I thought simply walking on the check was appropriate. The dipshit wasn’t paying enough attention to notice us leaving, after all. But it wasn’t worth that bother, and I just stiffed them on the tip. If a salesman treated me that way, I’d go to a competing store. I know I’ve turned my back on car salesman for less.
