What’s abundantly clear now is the usual suspects are mainly interested in catching out their target, I see no evidence they are genuinely concerned for the plight of the EFL speaker.

The only one still hung up over that, fucking **obsessed** with it, is you. That issue was resolved almost a month ago until you keep bringing it up. It was a minor thing that led to a minor gripe, and came and went pretty quickly. It wasn’t a big issue until you turned it into one.
There is something seriously wrong with you. I’m not joking or trying to even make an insult with that. There really is.

@wolfpup , you may really believe that your recent posts in this thread about language use are motivated by the fact that proper writing is a “hot button” issue for you, and not by your defensiveness toward Beck. I certainly have no trouble believing that you do indeed care about language proficiency.
But your posts in this thread do not come across as impartial. Any rational, objective reader is going to draw a clear connection between your dislike of seeing Beck criticized and your vociferous engagement in side issues like whether or not it is possible to discern from just a few sentences that someone is not a native English speaker.
I too tend to be picky about language. I don’t recall specifically if I’ve ever told a new poster that we appreciate careful writing and proper punctuation in these parts - if I did, I hope I did so in a cordial, encouraging fashion - but I’m certainly capable of it. Yet here we are - engaging on the opposite sides of the recent arguments in this thread. Why do you suppose that is?

Again: for those who neglected to read my 4 line inoffensive post and my apology please read them. The noob accepted. I pm’d him. Same, he thinks it’s quite funny that he’s gotten responses directly, at all. Was not offended in the least. Wasn’t quite sure he understood tho’. I figure those more in the know can teach him the ropes. If we see him again, that is.

I admire and encourage those who heap scorn on the illiterate, on bad spellers, and on the grammatically impaired. But such critics must be consistent and maintain a dignified image. "Tho’, with or without the comical apostrophe, befits someone like **DrDeth** more than a distinguiished pedant like yourself! For shame!

I’m torn between hanging my head in shame and railing against the enshittification of modern dictionaries. Merriam-Webster even supports the use of “thru”. No doubt some dictionary somewhere supports the use of “n” as a coordinating conjunction, as in “beer’n’pizza”.

I absolutely understand what dictionaries are for. I just somewhat regret that we don’t have the equivalent of the Académie Française to uphold language standards, and that our reference books are followers rather than leaders.
ETA: Maybe better stated as “followers rather than teachers”.

Yeah, I said the same thing upthread. I treat “white knighting” similarly to “woke”, as a banner of pride, so I objected to it being used in that particular case. There wasn’t really any defending going on, just lashing out, unnecessarily in my opinion.
Besides, the original concept of white knighting was that you were trying to get something out of it. Like to get something from the person, or to make yourself look good. I hate the idea that you can only defend someone because there’s something in it for you.
I’ll go ahead and make this post because I do think my position’s a bit different, but I won’t belabor any more since y’all are kinda done with it.

Gee, English would be _so_ much better if there was a official language police to tell you how you are supposed to language! I propose we call them the “Okay Boomers”.
