So I caved early.

I have sworn since theKid first showed an interest in Hannah Montana that we would never actually go to see a concert, and having seen things where crazed fathers compete while wearing Miley drag to win tix for sold out concerts and pay for $400 scalped tickets, I never thought that it would be much of an issue.

Today I got an email from a friend regarding a show this Friday where the ‘back to school’ special is $25.00 per ticket, including fees.

So I bit. Cheaper than a single sushi night, so I can’t justify NOT going.

It is something she likes, and I only let her watch the show on streaming Netflix (no commercials), so I don’t feel it is that bad. Plus, my parents supported me through other, nearly as bad, habits, so I don’t think it will affect her too much long term.

Many of my peers would never in a million years subsidize such a thing, much less attend themselves, and will be fairly dismissive of me for doing so. I have to, as theKid is newly 7.

What do you think?

I think you should say hello to my buddy Steve, who is doing the pyro for her tour right now.

Have fun. All the kids will be, and what’s more fun than watching a bunch of kids have a great time?

Hmmm. I may see him- these cheapo tix are sidestage…

It is true, but there is a world of difference between happy children and screaming pubescent girls. This I discovered when I took the five year olds to the Best of Both Worlds movie that started all this craziness. So I am responsible, after all, hoist by my own petard.

I am sure that my own daughter’s glazed happiness will be worth it in the end, though.

My daughter just found out that she is going - its her birthday present - she turns ten. Her birthday isn’t until this weekend, but she needed consolation, we are getting a kitten who is ready to come home, but we are going out of town, so she has to wait until MONDAY!!!

It was pretty good consolation, so I musta done good…

Her brother has better musical taste, his first big concert was GreenDay - at ten.

Why is the fairly mundane parental task of taking a teeny bopper to a popular teeny bopper concert met with derision and dismissal in your social set? Are you and your friends religious fundamentalists?

You’re bitching about attending a Miley Cyrus concert as an adult when people are paying top-dollar to watch the Wiggles and Icecapades!?!

Consider yourself lucky.

Yeah, I’m not getting your angst. Your kid will love it, it’s fairly cheap, and (from what I understand), the concert is pretty wholesome and harmless.

I’m taking my four year old and my two year old to the Wiggles in October. My oldest LOVES them, my two year old will be excited that her brother’s excited, and I’ll enjoy watching them have fun.

I think your “peers” sound like a bunch of cynical killjoys. I wouldn’t worry too much about what they think. Take your kid and have fun.

I don’t think I can call my seven year old a teeny bopper quite yet, but I get you. More of the crunchy granola type trying to suppress the mass lemming commercialism of Hannah/Miley than fundies, but there may be some suppressed religious aspects involved. Many of my friends are recovering Catholics.

While I, to a certain degree, would rather she avoid the kid bait commercialism, I am not going to try to hide her from the world.

I am glad she never dug the wiggles, though. Nothing against them specifically, but they creep me out.

Oh, and she has been to medium sized punk rock shows around here- her tastes vary. If it wasn’t for the TV show sucking her in, I don’t think she would be as much for Miley.

Giving her the ticket printout and watching her understand that she was really going to the concert was AWESOME!

Thanks! I feel better. I don’t know how much I will enjoy it, but thanks!

If it’s any consolation, she’ll probably outgrow the bad taste in music. I loved New Kids on the Block when I was a kid, but these days I’m so awesome that nobody has heard of 99% of the bands I listen to.\*

\*Yes, people who don’t understand humor, that’s tongue-in-cheek.

I was the lone supporter of my cousin’s NKOTB fangirl period, and she thanked me profusely at the time, and is embarrassed if I mention it these days.

I do, however, believe that the reason we were pretty close cousins can be directly traced to that…

Ah, so you are Emo now? 😉

God fucking forbid. One of my best friends is in a noise rock band, if that tells you anything.

Hmmm.

Looking at the wikipedia, not sure where that would put noise rock as a genre.

I like rather fuzzy punk, like the dwarves on BG&P and Thank Heaven for Little Girls; as well as many other bands, but I am not sure where some of the other listed references fit.

Isis quite liked the dwarves show I took her to- let me know if your folks come through SF.

:smack: You [just missed them](http://www.hemlocktavern.com/prog_guide.php?adate_id=2009-08-29) (IfIHadAHiFi). You’d have caught the last-ever Mount Vicious show, too, 'cause they were playing together, and MV broke up right after that. (Like, pretty literally “right after.”)

[This should be](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d9OIy-yc08) one of their music videos, if you want to get a feel for the music. (I should have been in it, but I couldn’t make it. I don’t remember what my excuse was, but in retrospect, I should have just hauled my ass down to the Borg Ward anyway.)

A slight hijack, but this is something I’ve always been curious about:

Since pretty much all of Miley Cyrus’ fans are prepubescent girls, I imagine at least 20% of the people attending have to be parents. What do they do? Is there a “parents island” they can repair to, with booze and soundproofing? Or do they just stand there and endure it?

I was confident the bolded word was going to be pedophiles.

I think if 20% of the people at Miley Cyrus shows were pedos, the media would stir itself to take notice. Maybe Chris Hansen could be Miley’s opening act.

> The Parents Lounge!
> If you are not attending the show and want to stay near the arena, or if you do have a ticket but need a break from the energy in the stadium, most shows will have a parents lounge set up. Here you can check your email, read the paper, have a cup of coffee and socialize with other parents and chaperones at the concert. This area should be well marked if your venue does indeed have a parents lounge.

They also suggest you bring earplugs.
