Millenials eating less cereal, because they have to wash a bowl

Mine’s not teenaged yet, but I do wish he’d choose protein over carbs more. We’re working on it.

Gee, welcome to aging. I’m sure you’ll be one of those people able to resist the efforts of your body to put on weight as you get older, particularly those who have kids.

Meanwhile, one data point in time is not germane to the thread. What would be more interesting is the trend in millennial obesity over time as they’ve eschewed cereals or whatever the hell this thread is about.

Oh, and welcome to the Dope! We have nice low-cal protein bars.

Consider that they may be fat because their parents practically poured cereal down their throats from the moment they started eating solid foods.

I think portion control is the key word. How many cereal-eaters actually do this? They may read the label, but do they actually whip out a measuring cup before they pour? I know I didn’t do this back when I ate cereal. I’d just pour an amount that seemed about right, and then pour the milk generously over it.

I don’t know if “opportunity cost” is the phrase I’d use. But I have found that cereal is at the bottom of my list as far as tastiness-to-healthiness ratio. A bowl of Kashi just isn’t as appealing to me as pineapple chunks with a piece of salmon and a pat of cream cheese. Or an apple and a veggie burger with a dollop of guacamole. More flavor, more nutritionally balanced, more protein than cereal, and with no lactose-induced bloating/farting. If people are really into cereal, they are certainly healthy options for them. But there are even better options out there–options a calorie-counting person may be more likely to stick with over the long haul.

Gotta love all the folks whose sole job in life is to write stories bashing millennials complaining about how entitled an entire generation is, who goes to college at a rate that is higher than the previous generations, who have had to do so when college is far more unaffordable than at any other time in the country’s history, when real wages are as low as they’ve been in a century, when it’s difficult for anyone to even get a job at all, let alone one that matches your degree, even when you’re eminently qualified, during a period of economic downturn that had absolutely fuck nothing to do with young people, and everything to do with old greedy fucks.

It’s great to fuck up your country and then find someone to scapegoat who had nothing to do with the country going to shit.

Also, enjoy your healthcare and social security that you made sure that you had access to, and fuck us by not making sure these systems are properly funded for when we need them, you old greedy lazy corrupt slanderous fucks.

Literally the only good thing the previous generation did was give birth to the millennials who are far, far better people than you.

That might be an exaggeration. It might be baseless. It might be ignorant and inflammatory.

Yeah, now you understand how it feels to read about your generation being slandered for no good reason. How does it feel?

Now imagine it fucking happens every single day, people writing that kind of shit about you from their pristine towers, enjoying their high salaries, contributing fuck nothing to society, simply because it’s in someone’s financial interest to shit on people, people who don’t have a media empire they can use to fire back.

It must nice to control the media so you can take shots at people who are under-represented politically, and have none of the access older generations do, because they don’t own newspapers and TV stations yet.

Gosh, I wish someone would pay me 50K a year to sit in an office and do the equivalent, which would be to shit on people who are in 4th grade, because they’re “spoiled and lazy”.

That’s about as meaningful as what’s happening here. I literally hope every single person who complains about “millennials” needs a doctor one day who put themselves through college in this generation, and the only thing that keeps them from dying is the hard work from the same lazy and entitled “generation” they were paid to write slander about.

Fuck them and everyone who shares their ignorant fucktard sentiments. They can eat shit.

Just substitute the words “Black people” for every single thing printed about “millennials”, and you’ll see just how fucked-up it is.

It’s the same LAZY and baseless generalization, amounting to nothing more than bigotry.

But it’s fine, because it’s about ageism, not racism, I guess. Really fucking enlightened.

At least you had legs. I had to walk on my hands, uphill, both ways, through three feet of snow with glare ice underneath, and the only thing I had to keep myself warm was the poison ivy I wrapped around my hands.

nah, they’ll just dismiss you because you’re younger than them, so what the hell do you know?

Nope. Millennials are the offspring of Gen Xers. Gen Xers are the offspring of Baby Boomers.

My boys prefer to eat something hot vs cereal. Sometimes they’ll eat oatmeal but more often than not they fry up some sausage & eggs and make some toast. Or they’ll grab leftovers and chow down on that.

No, that’s not how it works. You’re confusing familial generations with social or demographic generations (here’s Wikipedia on generations). The latter is based on age/birth year, not who or how old your parents were.

Millennials are the social generation that follows Generation X chronologically, but their parents could be of any social generation biologically capable of having children between roughly the early 1980s and early 2000s.

Sorry, no. Every black person I know loves cereal (other than plain puffed wheat).

Well, really, how many of them even bother to get a job? They’re always needing a ride somewhere, they don’t contribute to the household bills, and just try asking one to cook dinner even one night a week. It’s kind of pathetic. I fear for the future.

I usually eat 3-5 eggs and a cup of cheese for breakfast and a pound or two of chicken breast for dinner. Its easy, and I can make a couple days of food at once.

Metabolism changes over the lifetime account for at most 100 kcals a day of energy retention. You’re looking at half a soda a day, maybe gaining 10 pounds if you never changed your diet or exercise once in 70+ years of living. Obesity in middle age results from a lack of exercise and poor diet monitoring. Anyone who tries to tell you anything different is looking for an excuse to justify laziness. It’s fine if being fit isn’t important to you, but having kids and a career isn’t the reason you started eating an extra helping every night.

I thought about thinking up a reasoned answer, but I think “fuck off, gramps, you guys thoroughly fucked the whole Earth and don’t even have the common courtesy to die off and free up a job or two” just about sums it up.

I eat cereal when I have time to sit down (and I put the bowl in the dishwasher) but if I don’t, I get something I can eat in the car.

I think some people don’t realize who they’re talking about when they bash millennials. The youngest people from this generation are about 17, where some of them have multiple children and have been married for a decade. These are the people who were children when 9/11 happened, were trying to go to college when costs were at record highs, were trying to start careers following the financial crisis in 2007, trying to buy houses during the subprime mortgage crisis of 2007–09, and have been the base of the army fighting in the ME for 15 years.

They’ve had it made

I’m a Boomer but I can’t remember the last time I heard anyone in my age group bitching about The Younger Generation. Those with kids (& some with grandkids now) may speak of their own offspring–usually with pride.

Generally, there’s other stuff to talk about. If we want to bitch, there’s Ted Cruz, Dan Patrick at the rest of the Republican idiots. Or whichever local team is currently sucking. Or the weather…

Millenials are retards. Full stop.

They are the generation with the highest percentage going to college yet they can’t figure out to use paper bowls and plastic spoons with their cereal so there is no clean up. :smack:

Millenial: “Durp, looka me! I gotsa sciencey degear.”
Me: smacks millennial upside the head

You complain about ageism, and yet post the following:

How enlightened.

Now now, no need to argue, you are both right. Both Baby Boomers and Millennials are assholes destroying the world and the fabric of society in their own special ways.

I realize this is just one data point, but my daughter is a Millennial, has a full time job, lives within her means, and has a work ethic on par with my parents, both of whom grew up during the Depression. She comes over to help my husband and me with things that are beyond us now (we were older parents) although she has a house to maintain on her own.

She also eats cereal, and not with disposable dishes and silverware.

I know every generation has problems, but I hate to hear all Millennials bashed, just as I hate to hear all Baby Boomers bashed.
