MILLER's CROSSING: Chicago PD Used Machine Guns?

I love the movie-it is one of Gabriel Byrnes finest performances. One question i had: one scene shows the Chicago PD deploying a heavy (WWI) machine gun. Did the police actually have and use heavy machine guns? these were not man-carried-they needed two men to operate and weighed probably 150 lbs.

In the scene you’re refering to, the cops are essentially carrying out a hit for one mob boss against his rival. Which is not exactly standard police procedure. I suspect they picked up a little extra artillery courtesy of Johnny Caspar. Probably some extra men, too. I don’t think those were all cops, in that scene.

Miller’s Crossing wasn’t set in Chicago. It was set in an unnamed city. It was actually shot mostly in New Orleans:
