Just a comment here. On Saturday afternoon I flew back from Phoenix to LA. The plane was a small regional jet. I was sitting in row 2. Directly behind me was a family with two small children (infant and about a 2-3 year old) Directly in front of me was a family with 3 small children. One of the two children behind me SCREAMED for the entire boarding porcess, and for the first 45 minutes of the 55 minute flight. Since this hissy fit was started long before the cabin door was closed, I feel safe to assume it was not pressure related. When the screaming started, the screamer was not directly behind me. The 2 year old was. His main goal in life was to see just how often he could kick the back of my seat. After about 15 minutes of this, the kids were switched lap for lap, so I got the concert instead. When the screamer finally ran out of gas, the laps were switched again, and I was back to being kicked for the balance of the flight. BTW due to a bad back, I did not have my seat reclined, so I was not invading their “space”. If these parents did anything to either quiet their one child or stop the other one from kicking, It was not visible or audible to me. The three children in row one on the other hand were perfect little ladies and gentlemen. Not a peep, even the infant. The parents kept the kids entertained, and quiet. These kids can fly with me anytime, anywhere. The damn free range kids behind me, however are a different story. Oh and one more thing, Bose noise cancelling headphones, work great for the ambient noise of the flight, they do not kill conversations or screaming, I know this because I have a set. ---

I have a very low tolerance for small children unless they’re asleep. My portable DVD player and sound-deadening earphones are the best investment I’ve made in many a moon. Plane goes up, headphones go on, world goes away. It has the bonus advantage of inspiring seething envy in your fellow passengers who wish _they’d_ thought of it. I highly recommend it. ---

I was on a flight recently with a caravan of nitwits on some kind of hospital excursion (including doctors). They made a ton of noise, took innumerable flash pictures of each other, visited back and forth constantly etc. I slept through the whole thing thanks to those headphones\*. And earplugs. I didn’t know the Jerk Excursion existed. It was miraculous. \*I got the report later from my poor spouse who somehow restrained herself from committing homicide. ---

Not only is the analogy dippy, it’s inaccurate. You’re only wasting those people’s time if the delay in descent will get you to the gate later. In many cases, the gates are booked up and you have to wait on the ground for one to clear. Yeah, that’s much more enjoyable that waiting in the air for a slightly longer descent. Oh wait, it’s not. ---
