Back then we had enemies that we could trust. Not sneaky bastards like we have today. This sort of rhetoric is really a serious problem. Milum here is essentially insinuating that an opponent of Bush = an enemy of the country as a whole. There are all too many conservatives who seem to think that basically labeling half the citizens of the U.S. as its _enemies_ (or even worse, _traitors_ a la Coulter) is acceptable. This kind of rhetoric, combined with G.W.Bush’s utter failure to live up to his claim of being a “uniter, not a divider,” is a serious problem. These conservatives don’t just want to defeat the people (loyal citizens) who disagree with them, they want to destroy them. Numerous Republicans are on record as saying they wish to create a permanent Republican majority, i.e. a _de facto_ one party state. Folks, whether you’re Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Green, or whatever, at least half the country doesn’t agree with you. Being in denial about that will not help anything. It’s important to realize that this is not a problem, it is _essential_ to the health of a democracy. Attempting to silence and/or demonize people who disagree with you–taken too far–represents a significant threat to democracy. I could launch into a feel-good “we need to put aside our differences and work together” speech, but I know it will be useless. Milum, you obseqious, hate-filled, bottom-feeding scum sucker, figure it out. Disagreeing with you about this country’s present direction does not make someone the enemy of the country. The keys words here are “in vain”. But I think you know that. In that thread some people were suggesting that American deaths would cause a quicker end to the war/expose the administration/make Americans wake up/etc. etc. Not a view I personally hold, but certainly not in any way wanting “Americans to die…_in vain_.” To even suggest it is to do exactly what the OP is talking about. Quite disgusting, though not really surprising… ---

Once again, just as the OP said, you’re attacking and labeling people unAmerican. The OP said, “no one wants Americans to die in vain.” You said, “not strictly true”. When you were called on it you attack me (for a view I don’t even share) and call folks unAmerican, shifting the discussion to those “reasons”. Just admit it: you lied. You wanted to suggest that people “wanted Americans to die in vain.” That sounds so terrible that just putting it out there is enough for you, even if it’s absolutely not true. Then when you’re caught in a lie, you can attack people for those “reasons”, thus accomplishing your goal of calling “us guys” unAmerican. Nice one. :rolleyes: ---

" Damn, that’s some inflamatory shit. But I am unsure whether a “goal” can be “to wish” - I think most people either “wish” or they don’t. As far as dying in vain, well, I’m sure Bush doesn’t consider the deaths he has caused to be in vain, whether they be the deaths of American soldiers or Iraqi children. I saw him on that original “Meet the Press” interview and he certainly appeared to be trying to act concerned when he talked about the “young ones” he was sending to war. ---

You have to at least give **Milum** some major points for originality. In a recent [thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=252347&highlight=lemon+test) I started he referred to the SCoTUS who heard the case of _Lemon v. Of course his usual modus operandi is to make a ludicrous half-baked jingoist statement thoroughly unsupported by data (it’s odd- he can figure out how to post in red but the hyperlink button evidently confuses him) and then, when his ass is handed to him sauteed in garlic butter and resting on a bed of romaine, to take the moral highground with an “at least in Alabama, we have manners” non-sequitur (referring to Hillary Clinton as a man being somehow consistent with those manners). (Of course in one thread about creationism in Georgia education he went on a rant about how it’s nobody’s business other than Georgians _what_ Georgians teach; when I and several other Georgians immediately posted “you have our permission, non-Georgiatics- preach on” we were traiters. In fairness, I certainly don’t think Milum is an idiot: many of his posts show evidence of some reading and even sporadic flashes of wit.
