This isn’t the first time this has happened. A YouTuber called the Civil Rights Lawyer had a video about a similar situation, and the person they arrested had Real ID showing they were someone different. The police ignored the evidence and discrepancies and arrested the man anyway. Lawsuit is ongoing.

I also watched a YouTube video that was taken from police body cam footage in Las Vegas, where a guy was accused of trespassing in a casino. They had kicked a guy out and told him he couldn’t return, and days later, when he came back (or at least facial recognition software in the casino identified him from security cams) he was arrested.

In that case, he was let go after a number of hours, because they had all of the information for the person who had been kicked out, and they had all of the information of the person they arrested, and they were clearly different people. Yet, they still held him for hours based solely on what the software said. Eventually, someone sane in law enforcement pointed out that it isn’t illegal to look like someone else, and they had to let him go. It was scary how long it took to do that though.

I wonder if I can find the video…

Oh yeah! Here it is! It’s 17 minutes long, folks don’t have to watch it if they don’t want to of course as I think I pretty much covered everything above.

ETA: I misremembered; it was in Reno, not Vegas.

I was having dinner in the Cal-Neva (like, the second date with the woman who I married) and 3 Deputies came in and up to the table. Asked me why I “Chuck” was back on the property…

After 10 minutes of ID check and shit, they admitted they had the wrong guy.

I’ve seen it before, but I can’t remember exactly where… I think it’s maybe a three-move combo from some video game? Like, there’s an attack called “fus”, and one called “ro”, and one called “dah”, and if you use all three in that order, something extra happens.

And reportedly the state AG refuses to allow anyone to be given compensation despite the state having a fund to provide restitution for those wrongly convicted and serving long sentences, and is seeking to abolish it. Because it’s expensive and a hassle.

The law in red states has little to do with justice.

> Pike has a documented history of childhood sexual abuse, abandonment and neglect. Her lawyers believe that if she was found guilty of the same crime today as a teenager she would not receive a death sentence. In the years since her sentencing, her defence team have uncovered details about her childhood that they say the jury never had the chance to consider…
>
> In 1995, forensic psychologist Dr Diana McCoy was hired by Pike’s defence team and found she was severely neglected by both of her parents. McCoy’s report found Pike was physically and sexually abused by several of her mother’s husbands and boyfriends, and raped several times, once when she was 11 and again aged 17. Later, it was discovered that she was repeatedly raped as a toddler by her grandmother’s boyfriend. McCoy said Pike’s mother didn’t believe her that these rapes happened.

What’s the over/under for the DNA pointing to a member of the family – or maybe if it matched one of them, they would know it by now. The husband was a suspect, but he’s dead now.

Then there’s the victim’s daughter, whose reaction was “just because the DNA doesn’t match him, doesn’t mean he wasn’t there.” (not verbatim) 1980’s police work at its finest.
