Just adding my voice to this… Yep single older male. Raised by a single mom , One sister , Two best friends who are females since age 8 and 12 respectively. Women have it far worse still in every regard other than “free drinks at the bar” (if you’re stereotypically pretty). Also as an aryan white male I feel very comfortable saying any friends with ANY melanin in their complexion have it worse than me (and I grew up a ghetto trash kid) including any born rich ones (cops don’t pull me over for nothing very often…)

If anything its worse now considering the morons in charge of the world from Trump to backwards nations like Xi or Putin’s or Orban etc etc etc.(sorry Love their history but yikes to modern times)

I honestly would question the intellect of anyone claiming differently considering the evidence. Once again as MrDibble said “in my personal experience” but also I’d feel safe making an over arching statement of general claim as well beyond what MrDibble has said(outside personal experience) sure sounds like “bothsiderism” (hopefully thats spelled correctly? if it can be since its a new word heh).

After all no one legally regulates my body… or can charge me for anything other than trying to kill myself or commit me psychiatric style if I do any thing to my own body. Not so for women. Just arguably worse for them no matter what. Language alone… yeah that too…

> I’m just glad that one thing I got out of my upbringing is that hurting people is bad. I never hit someone in a relationship (at least not on purpose) and never hit any of my kids because I didn’t ever want to be like my dad. He was a great role model of what kind of person not to be (in multiple ways).

Same.

I had a real hard time at first with parenting my son because I experienced anger toward him, and I thought that made me like my mother somehow, so I was both stressed by his behavior and then felt shame and fear about my own feelings and also it triggered the hell out of me. I had been seeing a therapist regularly, I actually had to go out and get a second therapist just to deal with the parenting angle, especially parenting an autistic kid which comes with its own challenges.

I really just needed someone to metaphorically hold my hand as say, “Being mad at your kids is a part of life. It doesn’t mean anything bad about you. It’s an incredibly common part of parenting. You’re not like your mother just because you experience anger toward your child.”

And then I felt better, and, incidentally, find it a lot easier to remain calm. I learned that you can course-correct in the moment if things are starting to escalate and you can walk away and you can apologize - hell, I apologize to my kid on days where I’m just in a pissy mood and am kind of snappish. I don’t want him to think it has anything to do with him.

I’m sorry for the horrific abuse you suffered.

That’s awesome, and yeah. Your feelings don’t make you an abuser, your actions do.

> I suspect that most of the time, when men get frustrated at the conversation being limited to women, it’s because they are the patriarchy, and don’t want to see their power threatened.

I get frustrated when some men deny the patriarchy exists and in the same breath issue a grievance that is caused by the patriarchy. There are feminists with problematic ideology, but a lot of us just want things to be better for everyone.

> Not sure anyone is arguing it’s not a revolting word. It’s extremely ugly is terms of what it means and how it sounds. I’d never use it. It always put me off how back in the 90s it was used to describe a type of jumpy dance at ska shows (“skanking.”)

It really is a vile word. The only equivalent I can think of for men is slime ball and that really doesn’t even come that close. As vile as the word is I think it is best that it doesn’t fall into obscurity. It is an important word in culture. It sits at the lowest level of accountability, still gives room for having fun. Nobody wants to think of themselves as a skank and women or men should not behave like skanks.

What does this sentence even mean?

That no phrase is too dispicable to use as long as you have “fun”?

I must have been half asleep. I think what I meant to say was words like skank refer to the lowest of the low in society. Just having that title put on you is a form of accountability that most of us would want to avoid.
