I do think that some insults are childish, especially the people who insist on their cutesy, painfully-bad Trump insult nicknames _every single time_. But everyone uses insults at some point, everyone. Using insults and bad language is like farting. Everyone does it, it’s natural. What matters is the time and place you do it. You shouldn’t let rip a loud stinky one when you’re standing in front of a boardroom for your presentation, you shouldn’t stick your butt up in the air and fart loudly during church services, but you’re going to have to do it sometime and someplace. Just as using insults and bad language in polite company is a bad thing. (Just for your information, SDMB is not polite company and doesn’t pretend to be.) And yes, it really is naive to think that people don’t use insults, and it’s very hypocritical to insult people for insulting people, and call them names for calling people names. People don’t like your fake, performative pearl-clutching. And calling people out for using nasty speech in the BBQ Pit is no different from going into a public restroom and yelling at people for being rude and farting where others can hear and smell it. You end up looking like the unhinged and shameful one. ---

Oh, the old “its just how men talk in locker rooms” defense. Didn’t work when Melania said it about Donald. Doesn’t work here. If that’s pearl clutching, so be it. You can “pit” with out resorting to calling people filthy, and UNTRUTHFUL names. 'Cause it makes you sound oh, so tough. Yeah. Go you! ---

While language policing is practiced on both sides of the pond, it’s my impression that Americans have more enthusiasm for it. That said, I’ve always leaned against female gendered insults due to their typical unfairness and unbalanced application. I’ve had no compunction about referring to certain male behavior as dickish or assholish. I’ve occasionally flung those terms in a female direction, awkwardness notwithstanding. ---

I used to refer to men I thought were wimps as pussies then realized that was insulting to women. ---
