I’m also from New Orleans, so I’m confronted with fukt spelling so much that I don’t have the mental capacity to store it all. One of my favorites was a sign on the back of a car that was selling fake Jordans, perfume, and tee shirts at a gas station that said “JUS LIKE AT WAL-MARK!!”

When I was a kid, we lived on the edge of town and for the longest time there was a farm further down the road that had a sign advertising Braun Eggs nailed to their mailbox post. An artist’s show once had a watercolor of a country road complete with a mailbox and Braun Eggs sign. The rest of the picture didn’t match the original but we knew where she’d gotten her inspiration.

LOL:D:D

I used to work in a constuction office, there was this laborer guy who would come visit once in a while. One day I noticed his workpants were kinda big on him. He said he had just bought them from thrift store. His next sentence was—
“I’ma wearing some other body else’s pants.” Couldnt hold back that laugh.
Only in new orleans.

Not quite a misspelling, but close enough…

My office building is accessed by a set of double glass doors. A year or two ago I arrived at work to find that there was a hand-lettered sign taped up on the inside of the door on the left reading DO NOT USED THIS DOOR. What was really amusing was that the hand-lettered sign taped to the door facing inward for people exiting the building was clearly not a photocopy but said exactly the same thing.

In my local supermarket, the sign on one aisle says (bilingually)

```
                Mélanges à gateaux
                   Mixed Cakes
```

(The top one is twice the size as required by law.) It has been like this for a couple years at least.

When I worked at a university in California in the late 90s, a student dropped off a flyer for me to post on my door. It read:

Vietnamese Student Association
First Meeting of the Year
Don’t you want to know what’s happening in the community?
**Get involve!**

For some reason it reminded me of something that might be on the Engrish website. I laughed at that one for days.

> And before they changed to their new menus a Thai place near me had a menu which had a greeting to its customers at the beginning. “We welcome our quests to our restaurant”, or something like that. I used to go there with **Autolycus** a lot, and he would always start his order “For my quest, I would like…” Cracked us up every time.

You would especially love all of the seafood menus over here that offer “fried crap.” 😃

In Mexico, you see this all the time. Because Spanish ALMOST has perfect correspondence between letters and sounds, native Spanish speakers (unlike native English speakers) are accustomed to think that the correspondence IS perfect, with the result that they mess up on the few exceptions – “c” (before “e” or “i”) and “z” sound like “s”\*, and “b” and “v” are pronounced the same – more often than English speakers do.

So, you see signs all over the place, both homemade and semi-professional, which say things like “SE BENDE…”, which should read “SE VENDE…” (“For sale” or “We sell”).

\*_Yes, Nava, I know they’re different sounds where you come from._

In Sunday’s newspaper, an Aussie journalist was reminiscing about this one local chain of northeastern-Thai, or Isaan, restaurants in the 1990s. Northeastern cuisine is very distinctive; that’s where your spicy papaya salad comes from. The Northeast is commonly known as Isaan, from an old Mon-Khmer kingdom called Isana that flourished in that area about 1500 years ago.

Someone decided Isaan sounded a lot like the English word “isn’t,” although it really “doesn’t.” Still, they named the chain Isn’t Classic. Alas! It did not last long. I can’t say I remember the place myself, but he’s usually pretty accurate.
