“Can be” or “is”?
There’s a gallery in Toronto named the Art Gallery of Ontario. Everybody abbreviates it as “the AGO”, but they don’t pronounce it as “ago”; it’s “ay gee oh”. Would that be “AGO” or “Ago” under the British rules?
(And then there’s the Ontario College of Art and Design next door. Until ten years or so ago, it was the Ontario College of Art: OCA. People said, “oh see ay”. Then they added “Design” to the name, and the abbreviation became OCAD, which everyone pronounced as a word: “oh-kad”.
