So, once this is all over, do they leave the cave alone, or do they dynamite the entrance?
I think more typically for seasonally dangerous caves they put a locked gate across the entrance. If it’s safe you can get permission, if not you can’t get it. But that’s going to vary by location and local feelings on the matter.
I think the results so far have exceeded everyone’s early expectations, and are worth celebrating - but it’ll be a bittersweet celebration, given that one SEAL died during the rescue effort.
Yeah, I’m sure they’ll tie one on.
All out! Great job, rescue team!
Amazing news!
Now just waiting for the rest of the dive team to emerge.
What an accomplishment.
Yay! Such good news!
We’re still waiting for the coach, no?
I like him. You can’t live life not going into caves, not jumping into rivers, not climbing trees, not surfing the waves, not racing your bike down hill. All the fun has what-ifs and blame for the times the what-ifs happen. But when you look back you regret the times you didn’t go into the cave because you thought about all the bears and the floods and the dark.
Edit: I see the coach is also out!
No, the coach is out as well.
I don’t know how to post my happiness in a way that’s not trite and dumb-sounding. But I am so happy they are all out safe.
Wow. I never believed they would all make it. So glad.
Well said
I wonder what happens to all the equipment in the cave. Are they going to make trips to bring it out, or decide it’s not worth the risk and just leave it all there until the rainy season is over?
How long until this gets made into a movie?
I have to admire the tenacity of the rescuers. One died a hero. The guy who first found him, suppose he had said “this is too far, I can’t make it back from here” and turned around? So much selfless bravery on the part of so many.
Well done all!
The coursing water that carved these caves is prodigious in it’s volume and force. A long monsoon season is just beginning. I doubt very much they will leave stuff in the cave, it would be battered beyond useless, by the next dry season.
More importantly it could/would clog an important drainage and runoff route, for a huge volume of water, which could cause enormous other problems when it reroutes itself as a result.
My friend shared this video. Assuming it is actual footage, it’s remarkable. (Non Facebook folks should be able to see it)
Four rescuers as still inside the cave. Here’s hoping they all get out safely.
If that is from the just-completed cave rescue:
I hadn’t realized the team members were being carried through the passages on stretchers. The assumption had been that the kids were guiding themselves along with the guide rope, largely under their own power.
That video would seem to mean that something was done to widen the 2’ x 2’ chokepoint and the U-trap part in the middle of the passage.
I haven’t seen separate verification of the video (hence my disclaimer), but a Thai friend-of -a-friend posted it.
I’m still trying to verify it though.
