# Misunderstandings

I was over one of my best friends for a cookout once, with him, his brothers and his brother’s girlfriend. Somehow in the conversation, his brother’s girlfriend’s brother came up and I proceeded to say out loud how big of a “fag” and a “deuche” he was for everyone to hear. Even though in retrospect I really didn’t mean this and it was just a cause of my jealousy. Soon after I realized what I said, I left the party in shame.

Right now, I’m feeling quite red in the face because of a bad link in [this](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=525035) thread. No, I did not in fact design the Protector tower defense series. Please don’t bow down at my feet like that.

Auntbeast’s story reminded me of one from HS - one that, thankfully, went much better for me than hers did for hers.

A girl I knew in HS transferred in a few months into the year. She was black, I’m white. I’m also terribly shy, and barely said two words to her, at first. She immediately thought I was a racist.

Over the course of the year, I’d gotten used to her - and actually, developed a bit of a crush on her - and we actually interacted, friendlily, and she realized she’d been wrong.

I never realized this, until the end of the year, when she told me she’d thought it, and why she thought it, and apologized for thinking it.
