But not a player (and no more, I believe).
Without looking it up, I can’t think of any early-'90s Pirates who played past Wakefield. He may not have even been on a playoff roster.

I need a clarification. Are you saying Wakefield wasn’t on a playoff roster or the player you are talking about. Because Wakefield has two rings with the Red Sox.
So is your question "who is the last guy on a major league roster from the 92 Pirates, or is the question What player on the Pirates has been to the post-season?
Or is it something else?

Missed the edit window:
Does the guy you are looking for have to be a player or can he be a coach?
Because a coach would be Jay Bell.
I’m still thinking through their roster for a player, and I have gone through the main guys, and they are all gone by way of age. So, if this guy is still playing, he had to be in his 40’s.
OK, back if I think of it, but if would like a clarification on the question.

(Yes, I’m Pirates GAGA right now. I’ve lived with the haunting nightmare of Sid “I have no knees but I know Barry can’t throw for shit from left field because I played with him for 5 years so I’m running on him” Bream sliding across home. Last night, no bad dreams! I am so happy! In fact, I’d the a Steelers go 0-16, I do not care. The Pirates and the beautiful PNC park are finally being seen by more than just people in Western PA.

“ **Only player** on a major league payroll” = he has to be a player currently. I’m sure there’s more than one _former_ Pirates player employed somewhere in MLB.
“Play a playoff game as a Pirate” = postseason appearances for other teams don’t count. Nor would just being in the Pittsburgh organization count, short of getting into a game.
If **Hawkeyeop** has mis-stated the question, I will be very disappointed.

Dusty Baker has had the reputation of being the right manager to help build an organization, but not to sustain championship level competition. That was his story in SF and CHC. Too bad Francona’s in Cleveland, he’d be a perfect fit for that Reds team.

Sorry for the confusion. It is a bit tricky to word, as he is on player payroll, but is not an active player. But you are correct that I’m not looking for coaches.

Tigers announce their rotation for the playoffs-- Scherzer, Verlander, Sanchez, Fister.
Verlander says he’s cool with it ([“It’s awesome…it doesn’t matter to me…The day my number is called is the day I’m gong to go out and pitch. … Hey, you know what? If it was me, I’d probably have made the same decision because Max has had a magical season.”](http://www.freep.com/article/20131002/COL01/310020027/mitch-albom-detroit-tigers-jim-leyland-max-scherzer-justin-verlander-playoffs)), but it still has to smart a bit to be the club’s ace, but pitching in the deuce slot.
Hell, some people were clamoring for JV to move to the bullpen, and Porcello to be the fourth starter. But that would’ve been nuts.

That could be somebody who stopped playing, oh, a decade ago, but had a deferred-compensation contract that spread out payments until today or longer for tax and cash-management reasons.
I think the Orioles are still paying Albert Belle, for instance. 😉

Ah, that’s the trick.
Having now checked, I see Wakefield not only appeared in but actually won two of the NLCS games against the Braves! Pretty good for a rookie. I didn’t really know who he was until much later. But I wonder if he was the last active player from that team.

For tonight, Francona is keeping 11 pitchers on his roster? That seems an awful lot for one game, particularly given that double-switching a pitcher’s spot isn’t an issue. Maddon is going with nine.

It’s because he has Salazar on the mound tonight. He wants arms in case he gets into trouble early.
There are people actually wondering why Ubaldo was left off the roster, which is stupid because he just pitched 3 days ago.

I think that has to be right. Another old-timer, Miguel Batista (who was pitching in 2012) pitched 2 (bad) innings for the '92 Pirates but did not make the postseason roster.
