Cardinals escape…

…due to an excellent managerial decision by Tony LaRussa, bringing in left-fielder Allen Craig to play right on the bag at third base, making a total of five infielders. Aaron Rowand hit the ball down the third base line, and Craig made a good stop to begin a 7-2-5 rundown of the man running home.

Exciting stuff. [Video here](http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110408&content_id=17541082&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb).

That was a great dive and grab by Craig on that play.

I am glad I did not try to watch that Reds Dbacks game last night. Holy crap the Reds got creamed.

This is the only time I have seen Matt Maloney, but he really did not look like he is going to be staying with the club long. Everyone can have a bad outing and I realize that Dusty left him in the game to keep from having to use his other relievers on a lost cause, but it looked like he was throwing batting practice.

Well, we’ll get to see the end of last night’s Dodgers-Padres game before tonight’s game, since they finally called it at 2am after 4 rain delays. 2-2, top of the 9th, Kemp on first, nobody out. Better wear a hoodie tonight, because it’s gonna be COLD at Petco. It’s Free Hat Day, so that’s a plus.

No one’s commenting on the Pirates’ 4-3 win over the Rockies last night in the 14th inning (which probably ended some time this morning…)?

Looks like there was some great managing taking place:

> As Tabata dug in for the at-bat, the Pirates’ on-deck circle was inhabited by Andrew McCutchen(notes), giving off the appearance that the star center fielder was due up next. The Pirates’ next batter, though, would have been relief pitcher Garrett Olson(notes) since [Pirates’ skipper] Hurdle had pulled a double-switch earlier and Pittsburgh’s bench was now empty.
>
> But instead of walking Tabata to face Olson — he of six career at-bats and one career hit — [Rockies’ manager] Tracy elected to pitch to Tabata. That, of course, turned out to be a big mistake.

I like how the box score writer just gave up trying to figure out who was who over at Yahoo:

LaRussa is like some mad scientist genius. Doesn’t he also occasionally have his pitchers bath 8th?

I believe he abandoned the pitcher-batting thing quite a while ago. As far as I know nobody could ever figure out what the point there was. If you have a pitcher who is really a better batter than one of your starters, you’ve got problems that a a few extra plate appearances for the pitcher-batter won’t fix.

Orioles hand the Rangers their first loss of the season. Baltimore is now 6-1.

Zach Britton has pitched 13 2/3 innings in his first two big league starts, and is 2-0 after giving up a total of 7 hits and 1 run over the two games.

Nice job by Dotel there in the bottom of the 11th, to get out of a 0-out, man-on-3rd situation.

The Dodgers find the weirdest ways to end games. Instead of a balk-off, this time, Casey Blake gets involved in a game-ending and painful-looking collision that results in runner’s interference. And Jonathan Broxton collects two saves in under four hours.

Whatever. It’s in the victory column.

Sam Fuld turned a bases-clearing triple into an inning-ending out.

He pitched decently last season IIRC. And Arroyo was almost unhittable last night. Awesome 6-1 win for the good guys.
