Though they still rank well below the Dodgers and Indians for me, they are providing me with some much needed entertainment while my primary teams are in the midst of underperforming. ---

Surprise, surprise, David Price can’t do it all by himself in Boston. Pitching continues to be a weak point, but somewhat surprisingly that includes their revamped bullpen. Papi’s already telling us not to panic, which probably means we should panic. ---

Another weird factoid from the Giants: In each of the last 4 seasons, the Giants have gotten exactly 4 home runs from the backup catcher position. This year, back-up catcher (and rookie) Trevor Brown leads the team, with 3. Which means, I guess, that he’ll hit exactly one more all year. ---

I must say that watching Bartolo Colón pitching is such a treat. His style between pitches is fun to watch. And when there is a pop up fly, he runs toward it. And after catching it, he tosses it behind his back to first base. And that’s after tonight’s avoidable loss. I would never bet on a team to win or lose 100 games. I will always, always take the under. Sure, teams can lose 100 games. They can lose 119, like the Tigers did. But they probably won’t. Baseball is generally competitive, and the thing is that if you are terrible enough to lose more than 100 games, you will probably have a stopgap solution to your worst problems. A team has to be both very bad and very unlucky to lose 100 games. The Reds aren’t good, but I really don’t think they’re THAT bad. There’s some talent on that roster. Last year’s worst team, the Phillies, lost 99 games, and you can’t tell me the Reds are worse than the Phillies were last year. ---

The Reds lost 98 games last year, so, yeah, they were just about as bad as the Phillies. Unless all their young starting pitchers turn out to be quality major leaguers (which I doubt), and Billy Hamilton learns to hit (which I doubt), and 34-year-old Brandon Phillips doesn’t start showing his age, I see no reason they can’t be equally as bad or even worse. The only real improvement from last season is that their catcher (Mesoraco) is healthy. So far. ---

Funny discussion on Twitter about finding a more exciting ‘Ball Four!’ call for the Cubs announcer. They also talked in-game about what songs the organist should play for all the walks, some good suggestions. 🙂 I can’t get over how critical (some) Cubs fans are _still_ managing to be. It’s like the fanbase can’t quite believe that the team is actually good. ---

Sandoval has no value right now and cannot regain value unless he plays every day, which Boston, justifiably, won’t let him do. I don’t blame Sandoval for wanting to play every day. Of course he does. Every major leaguer does. It is what it is. * * * The Blue Jays MVP Project - I hope you’re all keeping up with yours! - currently has Josh Donaldson in the lead. Hardly surprising given he’s hit five home runs in ten games. Perhaps a more interesting question would be who’s the LVP. Current actual batting averages for Blue Jay starters: Troy Tulowitzki: .139 Russell Martin: .069 Chris Colabello: .053 The leadoff batter, Kevin Pillar, is hitting .220 and looks like Ty Cobb compared to those guys. ---

The Cardinals have a 28 year old rookie who just barely made the team because of injuries to other players. Jeremy Hazelbaker has been fairly productive so far: 27 at bats .481 average His 13 hits include 3 doubles, a triple, and 3 home runs Crazy.
