Wild night in the Bronx. The Cardinals go up 6-0 on N.Y. after 4 innings. Yankees come all the way back and go up 7-6 with 3 home runs (two solo, one a two-run shot) in the bottom of the 7th.

The Cardinals get 3 home runs of their own in the top of the 8th (two 2-run homers and one 3-run blast), scoring 7 runs to go up 13-7, which turns out to be the final score.

3 home runs on the night for the Cards’ Alec Burleson. 18 on the season.

So how was your trade deadline?

I think Brian Cashman just signalled that Aaron Judge won’t be playing again this year.

The Red Sox really turned things around, though. They went from what looked like a lost season to serious buyers. Watch out, Tampa.

Judge has only played 1204 games in his career and he’s already a Hall of Famer. I cannot think of any position payer in the Hall of Fame with fewer games played, except for Negro League players and even that’s not REALLY true because their career totals are incomplete in terms of what games are counted. If Judge’s career were to end now I am one hundred percent sure he’d be elected. He only has five seasons in which he qualified for the batting title, and he’s won three MVPs. He has he sixth best OPS+ in the history of the majors (Ruth, Williams, Bonds, Charleston, Gehrig) which obviously will go down as he ages if he doesn’t quit anytime soon, but, still, holy shit.

He is one of the most unique players in MLB history (itself a sign of greatness.) The most similar player to him so far is Ralph Kiner, and honestly, Judge is clearly a MUCH greater player than Kiner was.

Everything has worked against him, though, in terms of piling up big counting stats. He started late for a great player and has missed something like 200 games to injury.

Both Hope and Ryan are pretty big prospects. Hope is top 25 in MLB, and Ryan is in the top 100. I don’t really understand Ryan’s prospect pedigree - he’s already 27. I think it’s just a factor of the Dodgers just always having a roster full of starters.

I absolutely agree with you that any (well, most) other teams could have done this deal - plenty of contenders have good minor league systems. The Dodgers were in a good place to make a deal because they do an amazing job at drafting and development, and are flexible enough to put a package together that makes sense for anyone shopping around a star.

Yanks send Volpe, Dominguez, and Chivilli to AAA and are reportedly calling up George Lombard. I think it’s about time. Volpe was great when he first came up, but seems to have regressed defensively and his batting has dropped off. I think Dominguez is the second coming of Clint Frazier- everyone raves about his potential but just isn’t performing at the MLB level. About time for Lombard to get his shot.

Garcia gets some pop in the lineup for sure but seriously, yet another leftie? Looks like Rice will be full time DH and Garcia and Goldschmidt will platoon at first. I like the Ramos pickup, getting a right handed bat with some power is just what the doctor ordered.

Maybe it’s just Threads, but I have never seen Jays fans more bizarrely angry over what are, let’s be honest, pretty normal, predictable trades.

I mean, Kevin Gausman pitched really well in Toronto and seemed like a great guy, but losing two months of him after he wasn’t great in 2026 and getting two decent prospects back for what basically means nothing to the Jays seems like a damned good trade.

They must be like Cubs fans, who have to be some of the most “hot or cold” fans out there (and I’m a huge Cub fan, and have been known to be the same way on occasion).

Some of them think that Chicago gave up too much at the deadline, and I’ll concede that 3-4 of their top 25 prospects could be seen that way. But, as you well know, you have to give something to get something.

I belong to a few Cub fan groups on Facebook, and it doesn’t matter what the team does, someone’s going to be pissed. Last night, for example, they beat the Dodgers 10-5. And there were people complaining about it. One in particular constantly complains that Bregman is a bum (and I’ll concede that he’s not having a great year, but a lot of his numbers are close to his career marks), the Cubs should never have signed him, he needs to be DFA’d, etc. Last night, he played first versus a left-hander, and the same people were complaining that he should have been at third instead.

No move is the right one to some people. The Cubs (and I’m sure some Jays fans think this, too, but they’re in the minority) could go 162-0 with 162 perfects games on 27 pitches each game, and they’d still bitch about something.

Some people are never satisfied. Some people are idiots. And, unfortunately, some people are both.

Agreed - I can’t compare the difference in prospects between what they got for Gausman and what they gave up for Soriano, but I’ve been underwhelmed by Gausman this year (he also seems to have a bit the old Saberhagen “one year on one year off”). I think the Jays can tap into Soriano lost the last month or so.

The Jays gave up the best long term prospect to get Soriano (Arjun Nimmala) but got the most immediately ready prospect in return for Gausman (Bateman.)

In both cases it’s just a matter of team need. The Jays need better outfielders, but they have clearly decided to bet that the shortstop of the future is Jojo Parker, not Nimmala. The Cubs need help now, and clearly do not need a center fielder anytime soon.

Andrew McCutcheon, who at one time was one of the best players in MLB, was released by the Braves yesterday. He had signed a minor-league contract after being released by Texas earlier this season.

At 39, it’s past time for him to hang up his spikes. He should sign a one-day contract with Pittsburgh and retire as a Pirate.

It’s sad to see. Cutch was a beast there for four or five seasons; he hit for average, had some power, and good speed. And, then, suddenly, he wasn’t, and had been playing just above replacement level for six or seven years.

I don’t recall him having major injury issues which robbed him of the talent he showed as a younger player, but I may not be well plugged-in to what happened to him. Based on everything I’ve ever heard about him, he’s a good guy, and I wish him the best.

I saw an accurate but unkind post on a Yankee fan FB page: George Lombard now has as many home runs this year as Anthony Volpe. I like Volpe and wish he had performed better, but he didn’t. I think it’s time for him to move on. Volpe is not the future for the Yankees, nor is Dominguez.

Lombard hit a home run in his second MLB plate appearance.

His home run came about an hour after his little brother, Jacob, hit a home run in his second plate appearance as a pro; he made his professional debut with the single-A affiliate of the Marlins in Jupiter, Florida.

Both home runs came against the Cardinals, St. Louis and Palm Beach.

Nationals’ pitcher Miles Mikolas bunted home a run on a squeeze play against the Phillies last night.

It’s quite unusual to see a pitcher up at bat nowadays. But even more unusual when he’s not even pitching in that game.

He was sent up to bat in the 11th after the Nats ran out of position players. Which is a very Nats-like thing to do.

I just heard on the MLB telecast of the Tigers/Mariners games that Mikolas became the first Nationals player over the age of the 30 to record an at-bat this season.
