MLB Hot Stove / Offseason / Lockout 2021-2022

I’m surprised the Yankees didn’t try to pull one of the Padres catchers. Voit isn’t nearly enough for Campusano, but they have prospect depth to deal with.

And now Rortvedt is hurt. He was the only young one.

The MLB is changing the DH rule to accommodate Shohei Ohtani (per ESPN):

The new designated hitter rule is planned for the life of the collective bargaining agreement, which runs through 2026. Essentially, a pitcher who also hits would be listed as the DH and can remain the DH even if he is no longer pitching. Ohtani, the Japanese two-way sensation who was voted American League MVP unanimously last year, will be the biggest and probably the only beneficiary, receiving an extra one or two plate appearances practically every time he starts.

Seems like a good rule for the game. No real downside.

Universal DH:

“I’m again’ it!”

MLB changing its DH rule for the benefit of exactly one player:

“Good for the game.”

Brendan McKay is also a highly regarded 2-way player in the Rays system who’s had trouble getting to the big league because of recent injuries.

I’m not against Universal DH. Are you implying I was? I’m an AL fan that grew up on the DH. I remember Ron Bloomberg’s 1st at bat plate appearance as the first DH. Yankees Fan Here!

I’m not much of a fan of Ohtani and still think the Ohtani DH rule is overall good for the game.

I’m against universal DH, but if we’re going to have it, I support giving pitchers like Ohtani the opportunity to bat more. I see no contradiction in that.

It’s not for the benefit of one player; it’s for the benefit of one type of player, of which there happens to currently be only one good example in MLB.

If there were no players of this type, it wouldn’t matter whether the rule were changed or not, though it might or might not make sense in the abstract.

the dodgers have too many good players now?

a lot of people are thinking "must be nice "

The Blue Jays could really use him; right now they may have to use Greg Bird as their DH.

Even though the Reds are moving on without two All-Star outfielders all is not lost, since they’ve signed Tommy Pham, and he is a team-first kinda guy. From ESPN:

“I am going to approach this season as a revenge tour,” Pham said. “I’m playing to get my numbers, man. I’m being dead honest with you. There is nothing selfish about it. In the past I put up some really good seasons.”

“I’m playing to get some numbers. I don’t care about anything else. I’m looking out for me. At the end of the day baseball is going to move on without me. I have to get mine right now.”

Good news for us anyways

Interesting that Pham says that there’s no selfishness in his approach, but is nothing but selfish in the rest of his comments.

The Angels started Ohtani, Trout and Rendon as the top 3 in their order. Spring training is definitely in full swing and the season is quickly approaching.

The Washington Nationals have added to the hell that is City Connect uniforms. The Nats have taken it to a more vomit inducing ‘style’ however.

The Nats have some excellent traditional looking uniforms as their regulars, any deviations look awful but City Connect would have me reaching for the radio feed of any game they’re used in.

Given that their logo is so similar to the Walgreens logo, I was hoping for alt uniforms like these:

shrug I love the Nat’s City Connect Cherry Blossom jersey. One of the better baseball jerseys I’ve seen.

I wouldn’t say I love it, but it looks fine to me. I agree it’s better than most of the other teams’.

You’re off your rocker - those uniforms are incredible. I could see Walter Johnson wearing that hat.
