MLB: July 2011

I would’ve been happy with 1 out of 3 – the Phillies looked scary going into the series. Now, the Giants didn’t see Lee or Holladay; but on the other hand the Phils faced Zito instead of Bumgarner or Vogelsong. In hindsight, the Giants could’ve swept.

Not one for letting themselves be upstaged in the Philly sports market, the Phillies add Hunter Pence for their two best prospects and some filler.

Ubaldo Jimenez of the Rockies to the Indians for four prospects. Jimenez started last year 17-1, but he’s been average for a full year now. Keys to the deal for the Rockies were Baseball America #14 prospect Drew Pomeranz and #47 Alex White.

Pomeranz is a LHP and White is a RHP.

Big trade. Looks like the Rockies have thrown in the towel on this season.

In other trade deadline news, Detroit trades Doug Fister to the Mariners for Charlie Furbush and others.

Fister for Furbush.

Okayyyy.

Rich Harden is a Red Sox, if he’s healthy. Oakland gets a guy who wasn’t going to beat out Adrian Gonzalez at 1B.

Wow. From what I’ve read, Pomeranz is supposed to be a stud.

But with pitchers you never know. Alex White looked good in limited action and ended up on the DL. The Tribe are getting a borderline #1 starter with a pretty reasonable contract. Still, two potential rotation guys for one established rotation guy…a bit of a gamble.

I’m also hearing that Orlando Cabrera got dealt to San Fran, possibly for Brian Wilson’s beard.

Vin Scully just mentioned that. Well, the first part, anyway.

It’s the best beard in Entertainment, next to Katie Holmes.

Big fan of this deal because Lars Anderson was completely blocked and therefore useless and he was turned into something that might be useful. Not convinced Harden will be healthy but it sounds like there were doubts with Jimenez, too, and the cost would have been much higher.

That said, I think the Sox still need a quality 4th OF. McDonald can’t hit or field, and Drew can’t hit and is chronically injured. And a lefty reliever better than Franklin Morales would be nice, too.

Of course, I say this while recognizing that there are only so many hours in the day and so many palatable options out there.

Per the Globe, the Harden trade fell apart and is off, at least for now. Wonder what happened.

The story’s updated: Boston got a closer look at Harden’s medical records, and decided they couldn’t depend on him finishing the season.

Still wondering what’s happening with Buchholz that no doctor has been able to find so far.

I’ll be interested to see if leaving Coors Field changes Jiminez.

It’s a shame about Harden, who is an exceptionally talented pitcher but his arm is apparently made out of cheese.

Colby Rasmus off to an 0-for-everything start with Toronto. People are already just trusting that he’ll be ready for 2012.

Good to see Cleveland taking a shot at it this year, and not fall into the same trap so many small-market clubs do, of trying to build for a future that can’t last and may never come.

Jayson Stark says Rafael Furcal to Cardinals for Alex Castellanos.

Gotta wonder just how big an asswipe Orlando Cabrera really is, behind the scenes. He gets dumped about every year or less, and no team seems to want him back.

He was a fine player for the Indians. Not the best hitter, but he seemed to get big hits when they needed one. He’s just at an age where he doesn’t want to have to platoon with anyone.

I don’t know how measurable it is, but how far back do you need to go to find a worse lineup than this?

That looks like the lineup for my Bases Loaded team.

The Seattle Mariners have been posting lineups that bad for a year and a half now.
