Clay was already sent to the bullpen once for sucking as a starter. Back to the rotation and guess what? He still sucks. But David Price is really not much better. He has been ugly. I can’t imagine what a trade for Jose Fernandez would cost, but I’d consider whatever Miami asks for at this point. ---

Price leads the AL in strikeouts and his peripheral stats aren’t bad. He’s just given up a few too many homers so far. Really, his ERA is kind of a fluke. He’ll be fine, you’ll see. The price for Jose Fernandez would be probably sound like “Mookie Betts and all these prospects.” As the Marlins are in no rush to trade him, the price would likely be stupid right now. ---

In hundreds of years of baseball with hundreds of games played each season, Kris Bryant is the first player to have 3 home runs and 2 doubles in a game. Unbelievable that no other player has done that. ---

That guy’s streak stopped at 49. The current leader is at 34. I’m currently sitting on a personal best 10 games! Liking Manny Machado and Big Papi today. See how that goes. I know everyone is saying be patient with Price, but he is giving up a lot of runs. By the end of June it seems less like a fluke. The Sox are apparently interested in the aforementioned Jose Fernandez (who isn’t) and Gerrit Cole of the Pirates. Fernandez would be awesome and yes, Miami would probably want MLB talent, not just prospects. I’d be more likely to part with Bradley than Betts, but it’s a tough call either way. ---

Why would the Marlins trade Fernandez? I understand why 29 other teams want him, but there is zero indication the Marlins intend to deal him unless they’re awarded a package so gigantic it’d kill the receiving team. They probably will trade him… in a year or two. Fernandez is under team control for a few years yet, and the Marlins are in the playoff hunt. I know they’re the Marlins, but this is what they do; they win and THEN they dump. They’re not going to trade away their best player when he’s still cheap, they’re the first wild card and just three and a half out of first. ---

The Cubs have used six left-fielders tonight, three of them pitchers. I believe this ties the record for most players at any position other than (obviously) pitcher, previously set by Dick Williams when he was playing revolving second basemen in 1972. ---

Gotta love that move–Travis Wood put into the outfield, replacing an actual position player (Fowler) and then switching off with another relief pitcher over the next couple of innings. Shades of what Whitey Herzog used to do once in a while with Todd Worrell, his closer in the late eighties. Article on the Blue Jay site today is that the bullpen took a big loss because of an injury to Gavin Floyd. Honestly, if losing Gavin Floyd is a huge concern, I think you need to re-evaluate your situation. ---

That being said, there was a note in an article I read recently that said Price’s velocity on his fastball has gone from 94 last year to 92 this year…so that’s certainly a dip to be concerned about. Obviously, using his other pitches more often, and mixing them in intelligently, can help make up for a loss in fastball speed; many pitchers have done it in the past. Still, I’d imagine the drop in velocity has the Boston management people a little worried, and certainly suggests that bad luck may not be all that’s going on. ---

His FIP and WHIP haven’t been this high since his rookie season. He could even himself out, but it appears that his velocity issues are something that have to be addressed. ---

No way in hell would I trade him if I’m Miami. But I keep hearing his name floated out there. Hearing the Sox have possibly already inquired about him. Turns out, the Marlins might be _buyers_. The Orioles made a rare visit to San Diego this week for a two-game series. We couldn’t make it to last night’s game, but my wife and I went out to Petco Park today, and saw Baltimore beat up on the Padres to the tune of 12-6. Petco Park for a day game, especially if you have a seat in the shade (which we did), is a fantastic place to watch baseball. After rooting against the Padres last night and today, i’ll be cheering for them this weekend when the Yankees come to town. Baltimore’s win today was their 7th in a row, and they now have a five-and-a-half-run lead in the AL East. I wasn’t really expecting that at the beginning of the season. ---

The Cubs limped into Cincinnati having lost something like 6 of their last 7. They certainly picked the right team to get the offense going again. They leave having swept the Reds, and the kids are producing. ---

I believe someone mentioned Alexander De Aza upthread. The Mets, who have not been hitting well in general, decided to start him tonight and make him their leadoff man. Oops. Here are some of De Aza’s hitting stats, as of the end of the evening (he went 0-4 with two strikeouts): Batting average: .158 OBP: .208 SP: .232 OPS: .439 OWAR: -0.9 Batting…leadoff. I know he has been better in previous years and hasn’t played ALL that much this season, but still…is there such a thing as managerial malpractice? ---
