MLB: June 2016

I recall it being noted that the Giants and (LA) Kings were both tracking on the even year thing. Well, the Kings’ streak was broken this season, so I’m holding out hope that the Giants follow the same fate.

The loss in Pittsburgh was one of those “you gotta love this weird game” games. The Pirates beat Bumgarner 1-0, with the only run coming on a fence-scraper HR from a backup catcher with 24 career dingers.

Stupid arithmetic. Didn’t carry the 1.

[that makes so much more sense. .690 is good, but not that good. .769 is HOT.]

Umps wear a face mask but no helmet. This injury might lead to changes there.

I hope it’s only stitches for Emmel. It looked ugly.

It did look ugly, but it really doesn’t take very much of a head wound for the blood to pour in rather alarming quantities. I’ve seen rugby players with faces covered in blood from what turned out to be relatively small and easily patched (or stitched) gashes to the scalp.

Yeah, the blood was impressive but not really alarming. By “ugly,” I was thinking more of the bat smacking him on his head.

Some umpires use the “hockey style” mask, that’s a combination mask + helmet. It might become more prevalent, now.

This. He was clearly disoriented by the impact.

I hadn’t noticed umps wearing the hockey style mask before, but it looks like about 10% of them did as of 2012. I bet I know one more who will be switching.

There’s a guy from Arizona who currently has a 48-game run going in the MLB Beat The Streak competition, leaving him just 9 more to collect the $5.6 million prize.

Mariners got a nice win tonight against the Cards to snap a six-game losing streak … it was one hell of a pitching duel between the two starters, Mariner Wade LeBlanc (making his first Major League start since 2014, and who pitched six scoreless innings.) and Carlos Martinez.

This was the fourth game this year that the Mariners won with a walk-off HR, this time a 3-run shot by Adam Lind.

But this game was awesome to listen to on the radio. I loves me a good pitching duel. It’s one of my favorite things about baseball: so many of the best moments do not involve scoring.

Nice except from the Cardinals’ POV, of course. Lately the Cards’ starting pitching has been quite good while their bullpen has been quite fallible, which is the opposite of the way it was earlier in the season, even though it’s been pretty much the same guys. (When was the last time they got this deep into the season using only five starters?) I haven’t read any online Comments sections yet, but I’m sure they’re full of people calling for Trevor Rosenthal to lose his job as closer.

George Springer got the two hard parts of the cycle done yesterday (triple and home run)… in the first inning. Probably heard that some Kansas City fan had left him off his ballot.

So the White Sox hit 7 home runs to the Blue Jays 1 this afternoon, and the Jays still managed to pull our a 10-8 win. I know that teams have hit 7 HRs and lost before, but I wonder if a time has ever hit 6 more HR than their opponents and ever lost.

Six is a lot.

Earlier this month, the Orioles beat the Red Sox in a game where Boston hit 5 home runs to Baltimore’s none.

Seems like this would be a rather hard stat to search for without having all the game data available for searching in particular ways.

They mentioned this stat during the Cubs game today. It hasn’t happened since 1904, if memory serves

The “hitless wonders” (1906 White Sox) won the world championship in spite of having a team batting average of .230. Maybe the Tampa Bay Rays can emulate them. Last week the Rays had five guys in the lineup batting under .200.

Still, the Rays’ bats are starting to wake up. Tonight it’s only two batters under .200 (plus three more at .212 or less).

The Mets are also doing their part to challenge the '06 White Sox. Two starters tonight batting .176 and .175 respectively (de Aza and d’Arnaud).

Reds honor Pete Rose with induction into team Hall of Fame.

I assume the Reds can do this as a private organization but I thought they were still bound by MLB rules.

It violates no rule. Rose isn’t being made an employee of the team. Nor does it have anything to do with the big Hall of Fame, which isn’t owned by MLB.

Interesting, just noticed that both the Cubs and the White Sox are home on July 4, with the Sox hosting the Yankees and the Cubs hosting the Reds. Quite rare to have both teams at home, especially on such a desirable date.
