What a spectacularly fun day of baseball. Henderson Alvarez makes some history with the first-ever walk off wild pitch no hitter, Texas and Tampa Bay are going to play a play-in game for the play-in game, and my Giants manage to end the season on a high(ish) note with a Hunter Pence skitter-off single. Bring on the postseason. Go Sox! And whoever’s playing the Dodgers! ---

The Astros also made a little history today: when the Yankees beat them they became the first team in the modern era to end a season on a 15-game losing streak. They’d better hope their long-term plans work out. ---

My Royals finish with their best record in twenty years. I’m just happy that the Pirates’ winning season didn’t leave the Royals as having the longest running streak of losing seasons. Oh, and the fact that Mike Sweeney is now under contract to the Royals for the next four years. ---

It’s funny; A couple weeks ago I looked at the standings and thought, “well, for a team that basically punted the season, that’s not completely terrible.” Though looking back at my summation from around then, I’d still rate the bright spots about the same (pitchers Cosart, Oberholtzer, and possibly Peacock, catcher Jason Castro, shortstop Jonathan Villar), except that I’d demote Villar from “surprisingly good” to “adequate and young enough to improve”. Part of the 15-game skid was that they shut down their best pitcher this year (Cosart) just before the losing streak. If he’d kept pitching, there probably would have been a win or two in there to break the streak up into something less embarassing. But, meaningless season.
