I’ll add to this that from the business’ perspective, they’ll probably use this day to do a consumer test as to which kinds of doughnuts customers prefer. And they might use that data to determine which kinds of doughnuts they may want to cull from their line.
So the word choice plays a pretty important part in the ad. While you can possibly delete the part trying to tie it to the inauguration, you can’t delete the word choice from the ad entirely without changing the meaning substantially and making the ad less useful. Admittedly, the tie to the inauguration is weak, but if there’s no tie, it makes even less sense.

[tangent]Back in college, I heard there was a sorority/fraternity party where the guys were drunk and being total jerks. The next day, the women wouldn’t talk to them. So the guys took over several boxes of doughnuts to apologize.
Later that same day, when they figured the women had had enough time to consume them all, the guys took over Polaroids…of them wearing each doughnut on their erections. :eek:[/tangent]

I wouldn’t think the hole of a doughnut would be big enough for that purpose. Of course, there must be exceptions…

It’s not just about your tastebuds. It’s about being willing to make a SACRIFICE for the CAUSE. As I said earlier, I don’t particularly care for Krispy Kreme donuts, or doughnuts. However, I’m willing to buy a few in order to show a bit of support. If nothing else, I can feed them to the birds.
