MMORPG Players: What genre would you like to see in a new MMORPG?

Hmmm… How about a Western themed game. You can start out as an immigrant coming to the US and get yourself a deed get some supplies and head out west. You can be a farmer an entrepenuer or a miner and get that claim. Build small towns around the Gold mines, set up shops to supply them goods hire entertainers, build saloons. Soon you can start law enforcement etc.

Or you can be a desparado you know robbin’ folks and getting into gun fights.

Or you can be a Native trying to keep your way of life as the encroachment keeps up. Do you make alliances, treaties with the government or do you strike all these hordes of settlers crossing your lands?

Really, do you remember the name of it? I’m not overly attached to historical accuracy, because otherwise the idea wouldn’t work. OTOH, without it, there’d be no coherency. That’s why I’d be a bit more interested in the player characters being lesser made-up generals and officers and let more of the historical stuff be above the control of the characters. For instance, you could serve under a specific general in a specific battle, and your objectives would be some sub-set of that general’s objections such that he can still live/die succeed/fail as necessary to maintain the story.

Then again, one thing that I think would be very cool is if players could actually, through some series of events, change the outcomes of certain battles and temporarily giving certain territories over to specific factions, like some kind of server-wide event.

I’ve got a [Krol Blade] in my pants.

Ain’t that the truth. Though, for those of us who have crippling SDMB addictions, it provides a valuable outlet that actually includes speaking with others in real-time.

One short anecdote regarding types of people in WoW: Sure, you get the jerks. But WoW is a very teamwork-oriented game (though there’s plenty to do solo). I went today to do one of my daily quests in Shadowmoon Valley, and it’s a group quest intended for 3 people. I can generally do it alone, dying once if necessary (it’s basically defending a town being attacked). I got there and the quest was in progress by someone of the opposite faction (Horde - I’m Alliance). I figured ‘what the hey’ and started helping them out. Saves repairs bills for them, faster for me, fun fun fun.

Well, we can’t even talk to each other because we speak different languages - so she gestures thank you, and I bow back. I rest and get healed up and alt-tab out for half a minute. When I get back, she’s gesturing at me in a way I can’t understand. I start the quest and she hangs around and helps me too. At the end, I thank her, she curtsies back and waves.

This isn’t atypical; anytime I’ve seen someone around from my own faction when doing the quest, they’ve helped without asking.

Yeah, you get some morons, but stay off PVP servers and that seems to screen a lot of the people who play to be jerks.

I believe it’s called “Musou BBS” or somesuchlike? Try looking it up on Youtube, they have previews and gameplay clips.
