Not a MMO but a girlfriend and I loved playing Dynasty Warriors 5 together. Just fun smash 'em up action.
That’d require a working PS2. =P
Out of curiousity, would you mind elaborating on this? Are you talking graphics or what?
Slight hijack: About CoH/CoV, is there an official Doper guild or something? I loved those games but could never find anybody to group with and soloing got real boring real fast. Would love to pick 'em up again if there’s people from here!
Mostly graphics, I don’t at all like the look and feel of the game. Pure aesthetic choice, honestly. (I did sit down and let an EQ2 player play FFXI on my machine while I played EQ2 on his for about a half-hour at a LAN party in late 2005. Result? One new FFXI player. =P)
I’m not a member of them ( or any other group at the moment ), but I believe the hero group is C.E.C.I.L. (Cecil’s Extraordinary Counter-Ignorance League) on Virtue, and The Urban Legends villainside. Not sure where the Legends are. Also, there’s a chat channel for Dopers named CECIL; go to the Tab menu and choose Join Channel to get it.
OK, a bit of advice ( IMHO, of course ).
-
Tankers can be frustrating in early levels; their defenses are still low, their damage is always low. If you don’t like the tanker, try something else before giving up the game; playstyle is very different for different Archetypes.
-
For a Stone Tanker, you’ll want Teleport for a travel power; Stone’s own powers suppress everything else.
-
Go to Options, General in the menu. Turn on Villain Chat whenever you make a character so you can hear villains on the Help and other channels. Also turn on Prompt Team Teleport so you won’t get teleported without expecting it.
-
At level 5, go to the Hollows ( exit is in eastern Atlas City ) and talk to David Wincott right in front of the gate; your other contacts will send you, and you’ll save yourself a trip. Then go to King’s Row and meet the Detective ( he’s on the map, and you’ll get a waypoint ); that opens up police band missions. Beat 3 of them and you get a Safeguard mission, a timed mission to stop a bank robbery and beat a named villain ( there are also side missions ). If you beat the Safeguard, you get a temporary travel power that will tide you over until you can get a real one; it REALLY makes getting around easier. Lowers the frustration factor.
-
Plan to get Stamina by level 20 ( you need to take two powers in the same pool to get it ); it makes a huge difference, and is a near necessity for most non-Mastermind characters.

There’s a lot of useful advice and guides in the game forums, but an awful large population of gloomy types as well. Take with a strong grain of salt any negative talk. If you listen to them too much you’ll feel depressed that you can’t solo an Archvillain and a half dozen +5 bosses. The guides are very useful, however.
It’s open to any Doper, not just those named “Cecil”.
I’ve been playing for three years and no one ever told me that!
The Urban Legends are on Protector. The idea is an urban legend-themed group, but your character doesn’t have to be UL-themed to join. In fact, I think UL characters like Kidney Thief and JATO Man(is that the right name?) are in the minority.
Things are going to get shaken up in a fairly major way in the next few weeks. The update that’s currently being tested has some major new systems, mainly Inventions and the Consignment House. The Inventions system is CoX’s answer to crafting; you don’t have to level up crafting skills, and there’s no chance of failure–you just have to acquire recipes and salvage pieces and put them together at an invention table. The Consignment House/Black Market provides a mechanism for player exchanges similar to the auction houses and such in other games (something CoX hasn’t had in the past).
If you want to get a look at these systems before they go live, this thread has instructions for accessing the test server. The stickied threads in the Training Room forum have a lot of info on the new systems, but a lot of ranting and complaining, too.
Sweet! I think I’m going to pick up CoV again and just for the TUL name alone. Who do I talk to to join?
Oh, and Zeriel, hit me up if you and wifey ever want a threesome for the newbie levels
Join the CECIL chat channel and see who’s on. Both CECIL on Virtue and Urban Legends on Protector have an open recruiting policy, with almost all members able to invite. The main reason to be in the SG, for me, is the access to the supergroup base and its teleporters to various city zones – it makes traveling easier.
And let me second the recommendation for the Good vs. Evil edition – the additional powers include a supergroup base teleporter and a jump pack, both very handy for getting around.
Thirded. The Jump Pack alone is great; it makes other powers more effective. Especially superspeed; being able to get over the occasional wall or chasm without blowing a whole power choice on Hover is very nice. The VIP card that teleports you to Pocket D is great for travelling.
Plus the Sinister costume parts and Justice shoulder pads are cool as hell.
Quick nitpick: The GvE teleport takes you to Pocket D (the interdimensional disco/tiki lounge). The power that teleports you to the base is a veteran reward. Of course, Pocket D also provides shortcuts to several zones, and the base and its telepads are accessible from most zones anyway. I like having both.
She should have it. I sent the key.
If you want an option, I have a villain group established on Victory called the Evil Shadow Knights. Come to the dark side!
julia@atheblahblahblah, right? Yep, I sent it. Hasn’t been used yet. (The automated sender tells me when the key I sent was used.)
I mostly play on Pinnacle (for Heroes) and Triumph (for Villains) in case anybody decides to branch out. On Pinnacle I can help you with money and teams; on Triumph I can’t, since all my villains are under level 12. I still can’t get into playing villains as much.
Oh yeah, sorry. I got both of them around the same time, and conflated them. Oops.
Kingdom of Loathing.
It’s a satirical RPG, poking fun at a lot of old games, as well as a lot of pop culture.
There are fifteen skills per class, so not a lot of customization possible there – except that, like with Diablo II, when you finish the final quest, you have the option of restarting (and maybe making it harder), and only one of the skills you acquired will be available in the next run, which is called ‘perming’ a skill. You get to perm one skill each time you ascend, so you can build up quite a variety of skills.
If you play a lot, and work on it, you can get decent items. If you play casually, you can have fun and still make progress. (Unlike Diablo II, though, it’s turn-based, so it’s harder to play for hours on end.)
I highly recommend it, especially if you create multiple accounts (which is allowed as long as none of them are really helping each other; trades are fine, but not just sharing everything).
Is the CoH / CoV servers localized or international à la Eve Online? In other words, is there seperate servers for Europe and the US? (EuDoper here) Is there a kindly Eurodoper who could send me an invite? I’d really appreciate it!
