Modern medical practice and infrastructure is one giant clusterfuck.

I have no idea, it just seems that lots of people believe stuff like I wrote. I wouldn’t be surprised if that made caring for the sick or injured into some sort of sinful defiance of the Lord’s will. Jesus doesn’t want sinners to have healthcare, dont’cha know. This might partially explain the resistance of lower middle class Republicans to fixing our health care system.

FTR, my intent was not to whoosh The Devil’s Grandmother. Who would be so foolish as to attempt such a feat?

I was just trying to follow the “logic” of comments made, and in no way am I assuming that Squink actually believes what was posted, he or she (love those androgynous screen names) was merely trying to explain how morality and public healthcare policy seem to be inextricably linked.

I think our friendly little exchange has shown that to be ridiculous, but there’s batshit crazier stuff than that out there that people believe is gospel truth, so go figure. Squink, do you think that people who believe this crap have ever actually* read *the bible? I don’t recall Jesus ever saying anything like “Don’t help each other man, not if it costs you money!”

Upon preview, the thought occurs to me that the last few posts are a perfect illustration of why we need separation of church and state.

The fun is you make your premium payments month after month, then they may just deny coverage when you need it. Do they give back all the premiums then? I doubt it. Medical companies do a lot of data mining. They find about whatever prescriptions you take and what over the counter medicines you buy. Then if there is a danger that they will say the use of these drugs indicated a previous condition or one you were hiding and your policy is invalid. The system belongs to them.

::laughter:: I don’t think people are whooshin’ me on purpose!

I’ve always read Jesus’ words in John chapter 9 as a deliberate statement that illness (in that particular case, blindness) was not the result of sin.
Is the bible under copyright? In case the translation is I won’t paste it here, see http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%209&version=NASB if you’re curious.

And gonzomax? I’m so on board with you I probabaly need a tinfoil hat to protect my thoughts from the bad bad insurance companies. Are there any legal limits to what your insurer can know about you?

What’s a “preexisting condition”? And why would it stop you from getting health coverage? Isn’t the point of health coverage to cover the health problems you have?

[/disingenuously naive Canadian]

Heavens no! Health insurance is only for problems you will never have.

No, the point is to collect premiums from Americans. Pre-existing conditions increase the odds of a payout, so they either deny such Americans coverage or price themselves beyond the level one can pay.

[/genuinely jaded Canadian]

I think the point of a preexisting condition clause, albeit a tenuous one, is to stop you from paying $500 in premiums right before you go in for a $50,000 surgery, and then dropping the company. This is part of the formula which includes making sure you don’t have breaks in coverage, because if you have had continuous coverage, you are less likely to be seeking insurance just to cover a procedure and then drop out.

I hope that made sense…it makes some sense in my head.

Sure , but since they are not enforced it works out as no in real life.

They pay a ton to get info. Rest assured they will use it against their customers. What a stupid medical system we have.

Tell Katie and Suri hello from me.

That study is bullshit. Where are these 3 second guys? I’ve never had a doctor listen to me for that long.

Reality is more like the “zip it” scene from Austin Powers.

As a physician with 30 years of exposure to US medicine, I’d agree that most of these comments accurately represent common scenarios.

Be patient.

It’s about to get much worse.

It’s a condition that existed before it existed. Otherwise, it’d just be an existing condition.
