It started with the Weird Earl’s link of a couple days back–[Utilikilts](http://www.utilikilts.com). That, and the fact that men in kilts are dead sexy. (At least, the ones who look good in them look _really_ good in them, and they also significantly outnumber the ones who look dorky.) I am suddenly sorely tempted to get meself one. Not one of those crazy tropical/tie-dyed ones, of course. Something dignified, like black or olive or kakhi. I’m kind of obsessed with the idea, really. Am I insane? I can’t believe I’m honestly thinking about going out in New York City wearing a modernized kilt. I’ve decided not to act on the obsession for a week, to give it time to die out if it’s just a flash in the brain-pan. But time keeps passing and the idea shows no sign of going away. Are good calves and chutzpah enough to make this work? Am I the only man in the audience who finds the idea intriguing? Or is this a ridiculous idea? Discuss. ---

I hiked the AT a few years back, When I was hiking, I wore a skirt to prevent chafing. I think it was the most comfortable garment I’ve ever worn. A lot of guys on the trail wore kilts. You should’ve seen the looks we got in towns though. Imagine walking through some backwoods redneck mountain town in tennesee wearing a skirt. ---

Kilts don’t look bad, and I have nothing against them per se, but I think they function better within the context of Scottish culture than as a general fashion. I really wouldn’t look forward to the kilt taking hold and new and ingenious permutations hitting the scene. The mini kilt, the slit kilt, and the vinyl kilt are all fashions I would prefer not bear witness to. The camo-kilt? That just brings up bizarre images more at home in a Monty Python skit than on the street. I don’t think 1000 pantless marines hitting the shore will illicit the same fear as the good old fashioned kind. ---

And as a straight American male, I find the effect on the opposite sex quite intriguing. Usually I wear a “Great Kilt”, but I also have a cheater (permanently sewn pleats, with a hook and eye fastener in the waistband. I prefer the great, though. And it IS the most comfortable clothing you will ever wear. (And very easy to conceal all sorts of things in!!!) ## O Vidi Vici Veni! ---

Soooo…I wear a lot of blue, hunter and a little red (mostly Hawaiian shirts in red, though), what color UK should I get? I’m leaning towards the Olive Twill, but am also thinking black might be good. Maybe the khaki. If the women can give me some sort of concensus, I might be able to get it ordered and received before OhDope. Oh, are boots the recommened footware or coould I get by with sandles? ---

Then it is perfectly acceptable to wear kilts, even in public. BTW, I was on my way to an SCA get together this weekend, and walking down a street in Tampa in Knight Templar garb, replete with chainmail, sword, etc. etc. As I was almost to my vehicle, I heard someone yelling “NEE”. I looked, and it was a twentysomething in a brand new VW bug. I, of course, yelled “NEE” right back, bewildering the other occupants of the sidewalk that much more. ## O Vidi Vici Veni!
