If you had, you would not have typed what I just quoted, since all of those threads explain where the phrase came from and what it means. I apologize for thinking you would read a thread before posting in it. Obviously, that was an error on my part. I hope the links above are helpful. And I characterized them as a small but vocal group, because that’s what they are. If only ten people out of 1,000 voice an opinion, and 8 of them are all frothing against something, I would call that a small but vocal group. The fact that it’s a majority of the people who weighed in on the issue doesn’t seem relevant to me, at least not enough to make changes like they want. And I’m not being intentionally obnoxious. **Marley23** once helped me understand the difference between feeling insulted and someone else being insulting. He recommended what turned out to be an excellent book, [Sticks And Stones: The Philosophy Of Insults](http://www.amazon.com/Sticks-Stones-Philosophy-Jerome-Neu/dp/0195388240/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1326759154&sr=1-1). To quote the book, “Is insult determined by the insulter or the insulted?” I am most definitely not trying to annoy other people. The fact that they are annoyed doesn’t change my intent. But now you are trying to change the discussion to one of respect, which is why I brought up this book. Many are now hurt that I wouldn’t readily accede to their requests to stop using the phrase. They felt insulted, disrespected, and so turned to a place of authority to force my behavior. Their rallying cry isn’t so much that the use of an innocuous phrase is offensive, so much as it is that I’m being a jerk by not acting in the manner that they want me to. And now that you’ve made the same “bad manners” argument, you’re jumping on that same thought process. Is that really what “dont be a jerk” means in the board rules? Again, if you’d read the threads relating to this, you’d know that it makes me (and quite a few other people) chuckle and laugh. I enjoy laughing. If people want to avoid me because of this completely silly, innocuous phrase, then they most likely aren’t people I would enjoy interacting with. I mean, it’s possible they are, but if someone is so irrational that they would let seeing an 11 word phrase every now and again upset them to the point of needing to put me on ignore, I just can’t see why I should lose sleep over it. There are plenty of other people I can interact with who have a sense of humor closer to mine, are less judgmental, and less prone to trying to force other people to behave only as they think people ought to behave. In my opinion, _that_ is jerkish behavior, and if that were to become the litmus test, where would it stop? What if 10 people decide they are annoyed by another poster’s name, that seeing it makes them mad? Would the Straight Dope then endorse that the offending name must be changed, or else the poster is being a jerk? What if 20 people decide that posting anything supportive of Republican politics is jerkish, and demand that it be stopped? It isn’t jerkish behaviour just because some people don’t like it. And it doesn’t become jerkish because I won’t kowtow to the demands of a small but vocal group. Especially not when the board has already provided a means for them to remedy their own problem. ---

Ya know, I forgot to mention something else in my last post. Can we just do away with the fiction that anyone “requested” that I stop using “Let’s go to the quarry and throw stuff down there”? Requests are susceptible to refusal, and it’s obvious that this was not a request, it was a demand. Demanding someone stop doing something that is innocuous is jerkish; refusing a jerkish demand isn’t. And **samclem** , it certainly looks like you were calling me a jerk. If you were calling other people jerks, why would you say “concerning **Bo** ”? ---
