There is never a shortage of crybaby threads with people whining about something or other here: 1. Why was so-and-so banned? 2. The board’s performance sucks. Mods, do something! 3. So-and-so insulted me in GD. 4. Why did you close my thread? 5. Why did I get a warning? 6. Blah, blah, fucking blah. I can only imagine what your mailboxes look like. Why do you keep doing it? ---

For one thing, it seems they have you to fellate them if they are feeling a bit down. ---

I always assumed they drank to excess. Seems like a good excuse for that to me. Not that I need an excuse. ---

Honestly, it’s difficult at times. No matter how you approach the situation, people take things so personally. It’s seldom “I did wrong and got a warning, oops”, it’s always “you hate me for no reason! You’re oppressing me!!!” To be honest, though, it’s not much different than when I worked in management. The ‘problem children’ of the world never like taking personal responsibility for themselves, so someone has to take responsibility for giving them the boot if we want to get anything done. Why do I do it? I care about the board and I love that we are an oasis of mostly rational discussion in a sea of worthless and unreadable forums. Dopers have genuinely helped me out on many occasions - dealing with real life issues, help with major purchases, advice, recommendations, interesting thoughts. I love that I can post a thread and get multiple genuinely helpful responses within sheer hours. The Dope has shaped my life in many ways over the years. It’s a community and I wanted to get involved with it. All in all, for all the frustrations, it’s worth it. I recognize that we as mods deal with the surliest of the posters, but there are plenty of nice comments too - people who appreciate what we do and why it’s needed. ---

Heh, yeah, **Dudley** is a notorious kiss-ass. :rolleyes: It’s fun to hang out here and I think we’re helping to keep the board the special place that it is. Answering questions and reported posts is not annoying. Two things that do get annoying: when people focus on the wording of something you say and not the intent you’re trying to communicate (which happens to every poster sometimes, not just mods), and when people pull rank over technical issues with the board. I shouldn’t take that personally because it’s not my domain, but I think most of us do it at times. What does stun me at times is the bad-faith assumptions people make about why mods and admins have [insert controversial action of the day]. That’s pretty much the only thing that gets me riled up around here. ---

It’s not that **DG** loves the mods. He just really doesn’t like the rest of us in general. As to the OP; i’d be highly surprised if there were no Pit equivalent in the Fabled Mod Forum for letting off steam. ---

Jesus Christ. If this non-rant isn’t the most egregious example of apple polishing, then I don’t know what is. Some unsolicited advice for the OP: 1. There are probably better ways to apply for an SDMB moderator position. Next time try PMing an admin. This looks like us-vs-them to me. 2. If you wanted to rant about the whining, nit-picking and attention whoring exhibited by members, you should’ve pitted them by name. If you wanted to rant about the culture of kvetching you commonly come across here, there was no need to address this thread to the staff. Doing so is a transparent attempt to drive an even larger wedge between the Persian restaurant patrons - and the proprietor. 3. If you really wanted to know the thoughts of the moderators - and how why they’ve thanklessly volunteered for the job of nursery mom, without cynicism, snark or suspicion, this definitely was the wrong choice of forum. ATMB - or even IMHO - would’ve been a far better choice. 4. Unless you accidentally posted to thew wrong forum, most mods worth their salt will see through this lame and transparent attempt to create more board drama. They might even call off the wagon circling party and let posters question your motives without providing you any back-up. ---
