Added to my list! Thanks!

I’m not good at describing flavors.

I grow a batch of different lettuces; leaf, romaine, bibb, summer crisp. No iceberg – that’s hard to grow well here, and I don’t like it much anyway; it usually really is flavorless. The ones I grow do have flavor, though it’s often subtle. Sunset in particular is a really good tasting lettuce – it’s a red leaf lettuce – but you almost certainly can’t find it, though you could try a good farmers’ market. It’s hard even to find seed for, though; I’m saving my own on that variety.

I won’t be very interesting then. I don’t know how many, but it’s certainly more than six, and will be increasing; apples store better than most fruit, and I eat more of them in late fall and winter, after the softer fruits have gone by.

I don’t have a written record of my apple count, but it’s about 2. Definitely more than zero and definitely less than 6.

I enjoy the taste & crunch of a good one. But since I became diabetic, they’re mostly too much concentrated sweet for my blood. And even a small ordinary apple is far larger than I can withstand as a single serving. A couple of years ago for awhile the groc store sold bags of mini apples as healthy lunchbox stuffers for little kids. Maybe 20% bigger than a plum. I had high hopes, but they’d also been bred to be stupid sweet & still tore me up. So I don’t buy apples at the groc store and therefore don’t have them to eat at home.

Apples eaten out in public are also very rare for me, since I don’t eat anything that remotely resembles a dessert. For the same damned reason. Once in a great while when I’m traveling I simply need to eat something and an apple is the least dangerous thing on sale at the only open convenience store within miles. So I’ll buy one, eat a couple bites and pitch the rest. That’s where my annual total of “about 2” comes from.

If I had a magic diabetes erasing wand I’d probably eat a golden delicious every couple of days. Not anymore. Sigh.

While I do eat apple slices, I rarely eat whole apples. When I was growing up we had apple trees and peach trees in the yard. I would eat peaches from the peach tree but not the apples from the apple tree. The apple tree was second base for the front yard baseball games.

The landscapers are putting in a dwarf lime and a dwarf pomegranate this Spring. The fruit is a bonus. The scent in the Spring will be magnificent!

You people, with all your fertile dirt showing off. Here, we aspire to reaching [the level of Moe’s dirt](https://www.google.com/search?q=moe+is+lower+than+dirt&rlz=1C1ONGR_enUS998US998&oq=moe+is+lower+than+dirt&aqs=chrome..69i57.2864j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:cee78902,vid:bZ1QOoWn764), much less all that fancy store bought stuff…

As for apples, it’s really seasonal for me. I do agree that store apples generally run from the cheap, nearly flavorless red delicious / granny smith, to the oversweet (but at least flavorful) honeycrisp, making it a hard choice. My wife will eat a few dozen of the latter a year, sliced, and I’ll steal maybe 1-2 slices of hers.

But my vice is baked apples, which I blame on growing up in the North East part of the country. [This](https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/baked_apples/) is the closest to what I do online, but I drop the raisins, add some dark rum (Old Plantation normally) and top with a homemade butter and rolled oat streusel.

Thankfully, I normally only do it once or twice a month Novemberish-February, because that was the season my family made such things. Then it’ll be a few slices off the spouse’s apples for the rest of the year.

And I don’t eat whole apples out of hand anymore because I cannot STAND stuff stuck in my teeth which always happens - same way I won’t eat corn on the cob unless I’m home and can immediately floss sinus-deep to alleviate the discomfort!

I currently have something like 20 apples in my fridge. 7 of them are destined to be in a pie for Thanksgiving - most likely an apple pie 😅
The rest, I’ll eat.

In the mean time - do you (generic) prefer a crumb crust or a rolled-out crust for your pie?

That’s an impressively low non-zero result. Too bad it’s a health related thing.

Me? I don’t like apples. _Except_ Egremont Russets (the apple that doesn’t taste like apple) - and you’ll only see them briefly and in specialist shops/stalls. It’s pretty easy to keep track of how many I eat.

As for cooked apples - can’t even stand the smell!

Now… Normandy “apple brandy” is called Calvados - that’s fairly well known. Less well known - the Breton equivalent is called Lambig. I have a bottle of each. I’m very fickle about apples.

Now I’ve got calypso music playing in my head while a large very black man with a shaved head and a gigantic smile is singing

> Poot de lime in de pomegranate; dreenk eet all oop!

It’s been stuck in my head for a few minutes now while I read the thread. So I thought I’d share.
