This morning I encountered a first: I found a spot of green mold 3 cm across growing in the jar of raspberry jam\* I planned on using on my toast. I’d never thought mold was possible in jam due to the sugar content being too high or something. Perhaps it’s relevant that this stuff says “Made With 75% Fruit,” but sugar is the second ingredient listed. Jar had been in the fridge since September, most likely undisturbed since November.

Can jam get moldy? Or was this more likely feeding on a large breadcrumb that got in there?

As terms differ between Old World and New, I’ll be more specific: Aldi Specially Selected Premium Raspberry Fruit Spread. Product of Germany.

yeah it can happen. SOP in our house is to:

a) remove mould
b) eat jam
c) not die

I found the nutrition facts for [Aldi Blackberry Fruit Spread](http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/calories/aldi-specially-selected-premium-blackberry-fruit-spread-184100637), which is a similar product. It has 8 grams of sugar per tablespoon. Compare this with [Smucker’s Seedless Blackberry Jam](https://www.smuckers.com/products/fruit-spreads/jam/seedless-blackberry-jam-6), which has 12 grams of sugar per tablespoon. Aldi’s has considerably less sugar, which makes it less resistant to spoilage.
