Hate to hear that. My favorite Molly Ivins story: Back in the 90s Ivana Trump (Donald’s first ex-wife for those not in his social circle like I am) authored (or put her name on) a line of romance novels and self-help books. At a book fair (not sure which one, but I think it was the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville, a city famous for its love of selfaggrandizing Slavic born former models most famous for being divorced from self aggrandizing NYC egomaniacs who trade for newer models with each additional billion) Molly Ivins got seated between Ivana on one side and (mystery author) Elmore Leonard on another in a panel on recent bestsellers. Molly and Elmore were old buds but neither was quite sure what Ivana was doing there, but they gave her the benefit of a doubt. (She had the talent to snag a billionaire and undo a prenup, after all, so maybe she can write too.) When Ivana was questioned about her book she spent (according to Ivins) most of her microphone moments talking not about the books but about the tie-in line of merchandising (clothes, cosmetics, perfume, etc.) she was hawking. When asked specifically about her writing process she actually said something to the effect of “I tink about vot product I vant to sell and den I write about it”, a woman every bit as much a lover of art as her ex-husband in other words. When Ivins took the floor and was asked about her writing process and inspirations she said “Well it’s pretty much the same as Ivana’s really, just like most of us. Elmore was just braggin’ to me about his new line of MYSTERY SEASONINGS SALAD DRESSING and GET SHORTY clothes for the vertically challenged and how they inspired his art, but personally I’ve moved on to more personal areas of literature and journalism. That’s why I’m pleased to announce today the official launching of my new line of Molly Ivins Original Olde Fashioned Texas Barbecue Flavor vaginal gel…” Ivana was furious (once it was explained to her that she was being made fun of), Elmore Leonard needed oxygen and the moderator had to ask the crowd to calm down when they kept laughing for five minutes. Another vote for “she’s way more lib’ral than I am, but she’s good folks”. Hang in there Sugar. You can beat this. ---

Story has it she was advising Anne Richards during her gubernatorial run, when Annie was blindsided by insinuations of using drugs at some undetermined point in her life. “Hell, Molly, what can I do, I can’t prove I \*didn’t \* do something! I already told them I’m a recovering alchoholic, straight up about that, what can I do to answer this.” “Tell 'em you were too drunk to remember.” (paraphrased half to death) ---

Damn Molly, don’t go! You’re the one who got me interested in Texas “politics” to begin with and then kept me entertained when they almost always failed to pass (in my humble opinion) any sort of compassionate and fair scrutiny. So, just don’t leave us yet. There’s many more out there to educate and plenty, like me, who can’t stand the thought of not having your unique ( or should I say special? 😉 ) perspectives to keep us in stitches. Maybe it’s _you_ that is our Lone Star. ---

IIRC, Molly was one of the first if not _the_ first to refer to GWB as “Shrub.” It’s too bad she couldn’t have made it one more year. RIP, Molly. ---
