Mom lied? Death by Toaster...

Or seen that episode of Supernatural.   I about climbed up the back of my couch when that part went on.

I advise you never to watch the History Channel documentary about linemen working on energized 550 kV transmission lines.

Watched that. Most of it’s perfectly harmless, except for that bit about the one who fucked up and and got his hands fried off by a live HV distribution line.

If the toaster has a plug with two prongs the same size the switch will not spare you a shock.
If one prong is larger it should be ok, BUT I’ve been shocked by such a system!
The problem was in a motor home and when they hooked it up to the power pole they reversed the live and dead contacts.
That is one lesson you don’t want to learn the hard way. It melted the tip off my knife and made my arm tingle up to the elbow for an hour. For a while I was worried about other effects, but I recovered.

Yesterday I did some google searches and found the schematics of four toasters. On each toaster the manufacturer installed a DPST switch. Is this the norm? I don’t know. But a toaster with a DPST power switch will protect a person from getting shock when the switch is in the off position (regardless of how it’s plugged in). But I would unplug the toaster just in case.

In the sixties, our little bro(the one who got zapped by sticking a fork into the electric outlet) stuck a fork(a good silver one, mind you) in the old toaster and caused sparks to fly and the toast to catch on fire. I suspect that had he been dumber, I would have been down one bro.
