Here’s one of my favorites.
And here’s another. “Stardust” is an evergreen, but who would dare cover “He Stopped Loving Her Today”?

About 1:15 to 1:55 in “I Against I” by Mos Def feat. Massive Attack just blows my mind. The sick beat, the lyrics, the delivery…You and I can’t ride together, can’t live and can’t die together, all we can do is collide together.
The opening minute or so of Hendrix’ Voodoo Child (Slight Return) makes the hair on the back of my neck bristle. Simply amazing.
Joe
Watermelon in Easter Hay, Frank Zappa. Not my favorite version, but great.
Joe
You’re probably thining of “The Gunner’s Dream”.
For me it has to be the ending of “Dogs” from the Animals album.
(Starting with a classic: )
Radiohead - Creep
When the guitar kicks in, during the chorus.
Stone Roses - I am the Resurrection
When they sing the title
Television - Elevation
Second guitar solo
Weezer - Say it ain’t so.
The “Dear Daddy” bridge
Metallica - Creeping Death
“Die by my hand” bridge
Obscure:
Wilco - The Late Greats (Live from Kicking Television)
Guitar solo
Stone Roses -Love Spreads (Live)
Piano in build-up before finale
Great idea for a thread!
Another vote for the beginning of Voodoo Chile, that has been knocking me out for decades now and still does.
The rooster on Sgt Pepper and that drum beat draws you in so hard. I still love the beginning of Taxman also. Both of those moments are almost like a call to arms.
In the song Brian Wilson from Barenaked Ladies, the transition from simple guitar into the full band is so tasty.
Pink Floyd, from Dogs I think: “Bleating and babbling we fell on his neck with a scream…” That guitar slays me.
Todd Rundgren, from Wizard A True Star: The transition from Never Never Land into Tic Tic Tic.
Sex Pistols God Save The Queen.
Frank Zappa, from Joe’s Garage I, the beginning of Crew Slut is just so brilliant and unbelievable.
Actually that’s from Sheep.
Le temps des cathedrales, from the musical production of Notre Dame de Paris, sung by Bruno Pelletier. Just an awesome voice. Of course, most of the songs from that musical get to me! I love Garou’s voice as well.
Strung Out, “Never Speak Again”, the bit near the end “When all the words of the poets lie meaningless/ When all the trivial delusions all lose their place”… those two lines make me stop what I’m doing to listen to them, but the whole song kicks ass!
Too many Nine Inch Nails moments to mention. The entire repertoire has defined so many parts of my life.
The Mars Volta, Televators, especially the harmony (is that the right term?) when they sing “Pull the pins / Save your grace/ Mark these words/ On his grave”, starting at about 3:10 into the video. Another bit that makes me stop in my tracks! This band is way too awesome for words.
I kind of don’t listen to music that doesn’t have moments like this for me…if I don’t feel anything, what’s the point of listening to it? I could almost list my entire iPod playlist, since it’s the music I love the most!
The line “Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops” in Eva Cassidy’s version of Over the Rainbow.
nvm
This thread is a gold mine. I’ll be coming back for more for a long time. Great way to find new sounds.
Now this is not a gut wrenching, hair-raising moment, just a couple of minutes of extended sweetness: John Kpiaye’s guitar solo in LkJ’s Reality Poem, starting at 2:20.
Back in the Seventies my parents and all of us were listening to the radio on Christmas eve and heard this. Blown away by the crescendo at 1:37.
They immediately called the radio station to find out who it was (The Singers Unlimited), and rushed out in a blizzard to see if the record store had it. 35 years later I still pause to savor that harmony.
Thanks Astroboy14, you be correct. My bad.
YES! Thanks for that.
Let me preface this by saying “Amazing Grace” always leaves me in tears. It’s a (dead) Dad thing.
The Almost - “Amazing, because it is” makes me well up when the childrens chorus starts singing.
The instrumental break in Richard Harris’ MacArthur Park , found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=su3JdzUUuH4 .
Say what you want about it. Sure, the lyrics are a bit weird in places, but it’s a better way to spend seven minutes listening to one cut than it would be listening to Hey Jude.
I can’t listen to this song without getting nostalgic… Delores O’ just gets better with age.
