Just curious: am I the only one who thought Alex would come back after the break and disqualify the “buffalo head nickel” answer?

> My Response: What is the nickel?
> Desired response as provided by Alex after TS: “What is the Buffalo or Indian Head nickel?”
>
> Would Alex have BMS’ed me? I think I might have frozen and said something stupid like "wooden nickel. In my opinion, my response is correct as it stands and is technically more correct than the official one. After all, the Indian Head nickel didn’t just feature that composite picture from 1913 to 1938. It still does in 2013!!! Check any Indian Head nickel you can get your hands on if you don’t believe me. The nickel, though, i.e. the US 5-cent coin, only featured that picture from 1913 to 1938.

Today’s episode included a question in the first round for which the answer given was “buffalo head nickel.” Is that the episode you’re thinking of?

I did too. In fact, a quick Google search doesn’t find any mention of an indian named John Small Berries. Does anyone have any info on them, or are we getting wooshed along the way?

No, you’re not the only one. The answer, “buffalo head nickle” was not really correct. I have a small collection of these, accumulated by my grandfather who began saving them after they went out of production. I have only ever heard them called “buffalo nickles”. According to Wikipedia, “Indian head nickle” was also used. I can find no reference to “buffalo head nickle”.

**from Wikipedia:**

> [@](#):
>
> From its inception, the coin was referred to as the “Buffalo nickel”, reflecting the American colloquialism for the North American bison. As the piece is 75% copper and 25% nickel, prominent numismatist Stuart Mosher objected to the nomenclature in the 1940s, writing that he was “uncertain why it is called a ‘Buffalo nickel’ although the name is preferable to ‘Bison copper’”. The numismatic publication with the greatest circulation, Coin World, calls it an Indian head nickel, while R.S. Yeoman’s Red Book refers to it as an “Indian Head or Buffalo type”.

No, she guessed that several seeds of a particular kind measured one centimeter, even though the clue specifically referred to a metric unit of weight. In other words, she was either confused or just not paying attention.

Actually, I have a collection of these as well, and for some reason we grew up calling them buffalo head nickels, a complete misnomer. If you look on eBay you’ll see that I’m not the only one, and you can find it used elsewhere with a Google search…
