Monopoly Question

As the rule itself says:

Answering the OP with a quote from the rules:

Emphasis added.

It’s not a choice. You MUST your fine, just like any other fine at that point.

I think he’s referring to paying to get out early.

In the early stages of the game, it can be worth it, because missing 3 turns where everyone else is landing and buying property can set you back much more than $50. But once the properties are all (or mostly) bought, it’s often to your advantage to not be moving around the board (although, you do forego Go).

(Granted you can bid on auction properties while in jail.)

Which brings me to another rule that I have never seen anyone play by.

If someone lands on a property but doesn’t buy it, it is supposed to get auctioned off for someone else to buy. Everytime I’ve ever played Monopoly it just wasn’t bought and left for the next person to buy.

I’m not a huge Monopoly fan, but I’ve never, ever seen a property not purchased when initially landed upon. I’ve seen it auctioned off for a profit afterward, but never passed up.

Sometimes it’s wise to not buy early properties so you can save money for latter, more valuable, properties. I mean…you buy Baltic Avenue and then a few turns later you land on Boardwalk but are exactly $60 short…:smack:

This only applies if you knew ahead of time that you’d be landing on Boardwalk before anyone else got it.

Obviously if you don’t have the money to buy Boardwalk you definately cuss yourself out but you usually have the money to buy everything you land on during the first two trips around the board.

Personally, I never waste my money on those properties that come directly after Go. The second batch of properties I’ll pick up, just never those first ones.

EDIT: Is there any way for us to get a game going? I’d love to play Monopoly with some Dopers. Is there nowhere that allows people to save a game state to come back to later or such?

Best properties are the orange group. Nothing like nailing people who rolled a 6, 8, or 9 on their third toss in jail.

The green and blue are frequently not worth the expense because people can go to jail to avoid them.

At times,**I want to pay 50 to just go to jail **for 3 turns.

You have the option to pay 50 OR to attempt to roll doubles. If you do not roll doubles on your third roll, you must pay 50.

I can’t think of any reason as to why you would get to roll again, if you land on go to jail with doubles. I just don’t see it. Besides, other aspects are so specific, that EVERYONE knows “Go to Jail, go DIRECTLY to jail, do not ______ do not ______” I mean, I don’t even need to say it, and because it is THAT … hard nosed, I think I have to agree “GO TO JAIL” trumps all.

As for House Rules :: It has been said elsewhere, and I agree ::

Those of you who complain that Monopoly takes forever, probably have the Free Parking jackpot. Get rid of this rule, and then tell me if the game takes forever. **
And while I am at it, Do you guys play with an Auctioneer? [You know, as stated in the actual rules?!]

Everyone knows that the only real way to play Monopoly is with the rule that when you win you’re forced into Bankruptcy by paying damages to the other players due to ambiguously worded anti-trust legislation after six protracted hours of legal discussions.

Yes.

FTR: I have never played a physical game with Immunity. One time I had the option turned on, on my PC version. I couldn’t understand how to make it work.

As the MTV Cartoon Daria [Believe it or not] showed me in an episode, the Immunity is more or less as you have it, It basically boils down to, **“I will trade you X, if I can have immunity on Y.”
**

Then, for the rest of the game (Or some other agreed on duration) if you land on Y, you do not have to pay rent of any kind, as long as Y is not traded to someone else (obviously), as per your trade.

Or you could make your own Community Chest cards like Calvin (And Hobbes) did.

And then, you roll the 7 and the Thief moves to your property and takes your wool.

No wait, that’s another game.

Ahem.

Heh. “Monopolisers of Catan”. I like it.

There was a Wired Article on Catan a few issues back, that toally took Monopoly to town over how, … well, Un Catan it was, and why Catan is making strides on Monopoly because of it.

Let me search for an online version, and I refuse to play with money on Free Parking.

STFW… done.

Pogo.com has it.

Of course, if someone could actually quote the RULE that applies, we’d know for sure, right?

oh, wait, someone DID. :o:eek::smack::stuck_out_tongue:

Looks good. Anyone else in?
