Morbid Songs. (I know, I shouldn't go here)

How has this classic been missed?

The Jim Carroll Band Lots of people have died! died!

Great avatar for this thread.

Avenged Sevenfold - A Little Piece of Heaven

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KVjBCT2Lc94

Our love had been so strong for far too long,
I was weak with fear that
Something would go wrong,
Before the possibilities came true,
I took all possibility from you
Almost laughed myself to tears,
Conjuring her deepest fears
(come here you fucking bitch)
Must have stabbed her fifty fucking times,
I can’t believe it,
Ripped her heart out right before her eyes,
Eyes over easy, eat it eat it eat it

Don’t worry though she gets her revenge!

Simon and Garfunkel: I am a Rock.

Lots by Warren Zevon - - - in additionn to Excitable Boy, there’s Ain’t That Pretty at All, Play it All Night Long, and Accidently Like a Martyr come to mind.

All of them bested in the early 80’s by Blotto - My Baby’s the Star of a Driver’s Ed Movie. This is a fun song.

And to stick to a theme, here’s Johnny Dowd - No Woman’s Flesh. This is not a fun song.

*Ode to Billy Joe *(Joan Baez)

*Honey *(Bobby Goldsboro)

In 1961, Jonny Cymbal did a “Teen Angel” follow-up called “The Water Was Red”, this time about the beloved being eaten by a shark. Even teenagers thought that was too much, and nobody objected when stations refused to play it. I nkew a high-school girl at the time who had lost her entre leg in a shark attack.

Bobbie Gentry, not Joan Baez.

Rather topical, I present:

Diamanda Galas – We shall not accept your Quarantine

“Up, Up, Down, Down” by Kirby Krackle.

Starts out as a nerdy love song (the opening lyrics are literally the Konami code) referencing video games and comic books. It doesn't end that way.

Until we drove back to your place
I said we should do it again
That’s when you stabbed me with a pen
Because you planned to murder me
Cause you’ve been stalking me for weeks
And then shoved me in your house
And punched me hard right in the mouth
And warned me that I shouldn’t scream
Or you’d gut me like Wolverine
This date had turned out kinda sucky
I thought i was getting lucky
Not cut up in little bits
And served up as your favorite dish
She’s a man-eater I’m toast
Like the song from Hall & Oates…

Along the same line:“Pepper”- Butthole Surfers.

There’s always:

Throbbing Gristle –Hamburger Lady.

The hamburger lady of the song was a real burn victim. Full lyrics and original source material (a doctor’s letter describing the horrible injuries) here. Obviously not for the squeamish.

I first heard this piece of music in college some forty years ago, and I believe it is still the standard for an unflinchingly morbid look at painful death.

Has anybody tried to get this thread moved to Cafe Society?

Country Death Song - Violent Femmes

She was screaming as she fell, but I never heard her hit
She was screaming as she fell, but I never heard her hit

Chorus
A noise comes from behind
Bang! Bang! Maxwell’s silver hammer
Came down upon his head
Bang! Bang! Maxwell’s silver hammer
Made sure that he was dead
Whoa, oh, oh, oh
Silver hammer man

I’ve Just Got to Get a Message to You — the Bee Gees

The preacher talked to me and he smiled.
He said, “Come walk with me, come and walk one more mile.
Now for once in your life you’re alone,
But you ain’t got a dime, there’s no time for the phone.”

I’ve just got to get a message to you, hold on, hold on…
One more hour and my life will be through, hold on, hold on.

I told him I’m in no hurry,
But if I broke her heart, won’t you tell her I’m sorry.
And for once in my life I’m alone,
And I’ve got to let her know just in time before I go.

I’ve just go to get a message to you, hold on, hold on…
One more hour and my life will be through, hold on, hold on.

Well I laughed, but that didn’t hurt,
And it’s only her love that keeps me wearing this dirt.
Now I’m crying, but deep down inside:
Well I did it to him, now it’s my turn to die.

I’ve just got to get a message to you, hold on, hold on…
One more hour and my life will be through, hold on, hold on.
Hold on.

I’ve always been intrigued by songs with depressing lyrics and happy/jumpy tunes. “Girlfriend In A Coma” is the sine qua non of such songs, so perfect that I’ve had suspicions it is a deliberate parody of same (which maybe disqualifies it).

“Take A Letter, Maria” would also be one you might be interested in.It’s a lively, perky tune that features a staccato brass accent riff, but the lyrics are about a guy who discovers that his wife has been “finding pleasure in the arms of another man.”

Of course, the final two lines indicate not only is he content to let her go but is perfectly willing to get it on with Maria (his secretary), so maybe she had good reason to cheat on him!
