“Salmon farmers have to add special additives to their fish chow so that their product looks like salmon instead of cod.” Shouldn’t they have to put this on the package when I buy farm-raised salmon? i.e. ingredients: salmon, orange-dye #6 ---

Probably not, the same way that beef that comes from cows who have been given hormones or antibiotics doesn’t have to be labeled as such. ---

Second, they are not adding anything to the fish during processing. The addition is to the fish’s diet, which is a different issue. If they dumped dye onto the fish, that would probably need to be listed somewhere, but just feeding it extract of crustacean is not the same thing. Ducky, I’ve always been impressed with your sheer thoroughness in your responses, and the stamina to hunt up dozens of references to make a point. A Web search finds an interesting references… Well, the word ‘pickaninny’ appears in Ambrose Bierce’s Devil’s Dictionary (1911): PICKANINNY, n. The young of the Procyanthropos, or Americanus dominans. It is small, black and charged with political fatalities. ETYMOLOGY: Possibly from Spanish pequeño, small, + niño, child, or from Portuguese pequenino diminutive of pequeno, small.
