I’m curious why I never see this icon used on the boards (the reddish-colored icon that denotes new posts), even though it appears in the legend at the bottom of the screen. Is the board set up so that it doesn’t recognize such threads?

**Coldfire** answered your question [here](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=161742).

Basically, since so many SDMB threads fit those descriptions, they aren’t really all that useful. The option is turned off.

Thanks, **wolfstu**. I realize I should have searched for this first but the boards were being too slow this afternoon.
