Morphy's Wild Film Ride

Well, it’s June of 2003 now, do you have a release date for this yet?

I’m still kind of looking forward to seeing it. . . . . . .

What an incredibly cool thread.

This movie has been released on DVD in my country (Norway). I saw it on a shelf today actually.

This is pretty normal; I’ve seen many cases where movies are released on DVD over here before they get a theatrical release in the US. I checked the top 20 chart on homepage the of the biggest video store chain, and it’s in the eight place.

I’m almost broke but I think I’ll rent it tomorrow and maybe put up a small review or something if anybody is interested. After reading this thread I really want to see it.

Morphy has news, but he’s been busy busy busy. I’ll email him this link so he can come talk.

I think Morphy should bring a DVD of his film to a Dopefest and give it away in a drawing.

I liked the film. I especially like the “ass-neck” line. Nicely delivered.

Wow, reading through this thread brought back some memories!

Yes, as Ginger says, there is news.

All I can say is, live and learn. One of the main reasons we’ve had such a hard time finding a domestic distributor has been because of the film’s hard-R rating. For a while there, right after we finished, the pendulum had swung towards PG-13 films, and especially with a teen heartthrob in the lead, a lot of distributors really were scared off by the R rating. Editing it down to a PG-13 would have been very difficult, if not impossible, even if we had the resources (read: money, which we didn’t have) to do so. We got an R mainly for language, and we just didn’t shoot PG-13 coverage. Not saying that was the only reason it didn’t get a distributor right away, but it was definitely a huge part of it. As I said, live and learn.

But, the good news is, things are starting to loosen up, and it looks like we’ve finally got a domestic deal. It’s still not 100% official yet, but it looks like we’re getting a small late-July release. Probably starting off in New York and L.A., and if it does halfway decently, it will be rolled out to other cities. HBO and Newmarket will be distributing it (assuming this deal goes through); the same team who did Real Women Have Curves, and of course, Newmarket made and distributed Momento. The DVD/video release will be handled by Columbia/TriStar, so that will be bigger. We were just told today that we’ll probably have to go in later this summer to record a commentary track for the DVD.

So, how do I feel about the film now that I’ve got some perspective on it? Shrug. I’m not sure, really. I mean, don’t get me wrong, there are lots of things about the film I’m very proud of. There’s a lot of it I think we did right, and I think overall, it’s a pretty good film. But there’s also parts that make me cringe. Things I know I’d do differently now. It was definitely a learning experience. We’ve gotten some really good reviews from overseas, and some pretty bad ones, too. I’ve noticed that the good reviews are from people who realized the film was just supposed to be fun and a good ride, and the bad reviews are from people who thought we were taking it too seriously. I take that as a failure on our part. We obviously didn’t communicate something to these people, because we certainly didn’t mean for it to be taken overly seriously. Oh, and one review said we were a ripoff of the Ocean’s 11 remake, which is funny, since we shot Stark before that film was made. :stuck_out_tongue: to them.

All in all, though, it was a great experience, and I am proud of the film. I hope many of you get to see it!

Oh, and Johnny: I don’t even have a copy of the DVD yet! But thank you for the compliment!

Thanks for the link by the way, Hüsker Düde, even if I can’t read a damn word of it! I did manage to click my way through and find the top 20 list you mentioned. Neat! That’s a pretty cool poster, too (each local distributor makes their own poster, so I’ve never seen that one). Personally, I want the poster here to play up the comedy a bit more than that one does, though.

Hope you enjoy the film, if you do end up renting it. Don’t spend your last kroner on it, though!

Hey, I worked with this fellow, on that movie as it happens! I hope you had as good an experience working with him as I did.

No kidding!? Small world. I’m actually going out to lunch with him today. I’ll tell him you said ‘hi’.

If this opens in NYC there will definitly be a dopefilmfest.
