If black people (1) organized into a single political party, (2) via a combination of racial accretion and high birth rate managed to take over the state of Alabama, and with it, US military assets including nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, and (3) started a race war resulting in the depopulation of the Southern US and decades of anarchy, famine, pestilence and suffering in the rest of the country, would you think the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a bad idea?
Really, I think the best thing to do with this issue is just ignore it. Because I fail to see any legal mechanism that could actually stop the community center construction. Let the anti-Islam crowd work themselves into a frenzy about it. Let them bring lawsuits or try to pass laws that would block it. And let us sit back and watch even conservative leaning judges strike down anything that comes their way due to its blatant unconstitutionality.
E: Upon further research, I see there is still the lawsuit attempting to get the current building declared a landmark. I assume this is only happening because of the future plans and hopefully the legal people involved don’t cloud the issue.
it’s a bullshit question which has zero relevance IMO. If someone can explain any relevance to me I’ll gladly apologize and give a direct answer.
IMO it’s ludicrous to think that a community center in that location, especially established by this particular Imam considering his recorded history of opposing terrorism and work at building bridges, is any more of an opportunity of being the site of a planned attack than any other Mosque, Ramada Inn, or living room in the world.
Is it remotely possible that could happen? Yes? Would it be in any way logical to think “oh if only we hadn’t supported the building of that community center then this attack would never have happened because they couldn’t possibly have planned the same attack from a different location” It ridiculous. It’s like saying it’s Hamburg Germany’s fault for providing a pace for terrorists to plan 9/11 Oh if only we hadn’t allowed Germany to be united again we may not have been attacked.
If it came to light that Imam Rauf had a secret cabal of terrorist friends that had completely fooled us I still wouldn’t feel I had been mistaken in defending the 1st amendment and religious tolerance. I might feel that our own security agencies had done a lousy job.
So again, if there is any relevant point being made with this foolish question, {which I seriously doubt} spit it out. Stop playing games.
I’m trolling? Two Dopers answered my question, and for that I tip my glass. Yes, it’s a hypothetical, but it still leaves my question. I can’t believe I was fucking modded because I asked it.
Although I think it unlikely, I don’t see the difference between a terrorist attack planned in a building 2 blocks from the former site of the WTC and one planned from a building 2 miles from that site.
Holy crap. Is it possible an attack could be planned there? Yeah it’s possible, So what? Could the very same attack be planned at just about any other location? Are you just bored and yanking chains for fun or do you think you have a point?
You were not Modded for asking the question.
You were Modded for repeatedly demanding that other posters “answer the question,” over and over, while snidely putting down every answer you received and refusing to engage anyone who asked what your point might be.
Your specious claim that only two posters “had a set” to answer it is also deliberately insulting, is false on the face of it, and demonstrates that you cannot count.
It’s not even that, because I don’t know anyone who’s saying don’t build it-- they just want it built further away. So, it’s going to be built. And if a terror attack is planned from there, it won’t make any difference what its location is.
First off, I have respect for the Islam faith and the Muslim community.
Well then your are totally ignorant of the Islamic religion, the Koran, Hadith and Islamic history. You are totally ignorant on how Islam is practiced, you have no knowledge of Islamic countries and their culture, Islamic Sharia law, and you are ignorant of the life that Mohammad lived 1400 years ago.
Accordingly what you, and other Muslim lovers, need to do is get educated before any intelligent conversation can take place.
You are inviting a poison snake into your house and you are way too ignorant to know it. Once you understand the facts about Islam there is no way in hell (assuming your are some what intelligent) you would allow Islam into your town, city, state or country much less allow any of their buildings.
Islam should be banned in its entirety, that is if you care about the USA that most on this board do not. It is not my job to be your teacher, you can study on your own and do your own home work or just keep on being ignorant. Personally I do not give a shit what you do. But many are fore warned, did the study and are able to take preventative measures, but you can be part of the stupid masses lead to the slaughter if you like.
Don
Are you kidding? Do you know how bad traffic is in Lower Manhattan? Each extra block buys Jack Bauer an additional hour to torture his way up the food chain.
Personally, I find bigotry and the stifling ignorance that fosters it to be much more of a threat to this country than radical Islam. What are your opinions on that?
It is good that an honest hater can provide the rest of us with a first hand look at what Imam Rauf and his associates face.
Fortunately, such hatred and bigotry is not actually supported by the Constitution or, (yet), a majority of the populace, so good may yet triumph with the construction of the community center.
