Asking honestly, is this really that absurd? Couldn’t something like the posited Theia or another Earth trojan have had the origins of life at the time of collision? Not suggesting that it’s probable, and I understand the “pushing it around the plate” concept (and basically agree with it) but from a lay persons view it doesn’t seem “absurd”.

Could have, sure, but all the melting would have done them in.

Except that the usual justification for panspermia is that it’s too unlikely for life to arise on Earth. Sure, life might have arisen on some other Solar System object, but none of them is a _more_ likely candidate.

Or, if it came from outside of the Solar System, then you have to push the origin of life much further back in time, to a time when the Universe was even less hospitable, to account for the time needed for it to cross interstellar distances.

Except that NASA doesn’t have the ability to prosecute anyone.

I wouldn’t assume that. It’s entirely possible that NASA’s statutory functions include the prosecution of offences under the relevant legislation. And, even if it doesn’t, NASA could easily act as complainant in getting prosecution authorities to proceed. Collequially, we might well speak of that as NASA prosecuting the offence.

The point is moot since, it seems, there is no offence to prosecute. The relevant US law doesn’t prohibit missions which carry living organisms to the moon.

The organization that sent the tardigrades, [the Arch Mission Foundation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arch_Mission_Foundation), is American, not Israeli.

And why are you assuming that a crime was committed? Other than the fact that Israelis were involved, of course.

> Impossible. All known life on Earth is related, as evidenced by the shared genetic code. If life arrived on Earth via panspermia rather than arising locally, then the organism that landed must be the common ancestor of all current life, including forms much simpler than tardigrades.

This argument isn’t really sound without the unstated assumption that evolution is incapable of producing a simpler organism from a more complicated one. But I don’t think that assumption is correct.

Evolution can and does produce simple organisms out of complicated ones. But there are always telltale signs of that. Those signs all point in the wrong direction for Earthly life.

The original NASA Act was the [National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958](https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/STATUTE-72/pdf/STATUTE-72-Pg426-2.pdf).
That did give NASA the right to set regulations and provide for penalties. THough prosecutuion was to be done by the US Government.

The current law is[Title 51 US Code](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_51_of_the_United_States_Code).

As as aside, American statutes are hell to follow.

In the criminal justice system, space based offenses are considered especially heinous. In NASA, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as Space Force Investigations. These are their stories.
