Only seven holodecks? With over a thousand people on board, that works out to about one hour per person per week. Even if people pooled their ration, a family of four could use it for four hours, it would still be only once per week. And some people would have to take their ration at four A.M. on Sunday morning. I’d say that’s unworkable.
We know that there are at least seven holodecks; there might be more.
I can’'t find it now but I once saw a youtube that someone did with Barclay and the “A-Team”
My first and second thoughts were that I could play with MLB and/or NHL. I’m definitely a woman who has zero desire to be singer or a princess. Even as a child I never played princess…queen maybe, but princess??? Give me a break, princesses don’t have any authority.
Oh good. Thanks.
I think RPGs would be huge. Imagine playing something like World of Warcraft in holodeck mode. They already have games like Skyrim for VR, but the multi-player aspect, coupled with the advanced holodeck technology, would make it amazing.
Also, they wouldn’t really need rest homes anymore. When the body gives out, just give the person the option to be hooked up to the Matrix with a nutrient feed and let 'em live out their fantasies.
Yes, but as was said each holodeck might be able to have ten sections.
Right? Why the heck would I want to be a princess or a pop singer (not that there’s anything wrong with either, if that’s what floats your boat) when I could be a superhero, a Jedi, or a master mage?
Hmm…regarding the whole princess thing–Holodeck technology would be a godsend for those whose gender or body type doesn’t match their self-perception. I’m not trans, but as someone who almost always plays male characters in RPGs, I would love the chance to take on a fully believable masculine persona online, where the only thing that could give me away was if I played the “character” wrong.
There would be as many as there are genres of video games. Presumably the most popular amongst a certain crowd would be shoot-em-ups or RPGs where you run around killing bad guys and solving puzzles.
Aside from that, as fantasies go, I think I’d experience some luxuries, visit exotic locations, maybe have a (safe) James Bond-type (Indiana Jones-type/Lord of the Rings-type) adventure to reach an end-goal of sorts.
Isn’t it obvious? Everyone in Star Fleet would run The Kobayashi Maru until they won.
We all know what the holodeck would be used for.
And we also know the worst job on the Enterprise: Being the guy who has to squeegie the holodeck clean.
I fucking love that episode, it was hilarious how he made Riker be short in his holodeck fantasy. Riker’s tall strutting is such a key component of his character’s presentation and I love how Barclay literally “cut him down to size.”
TNG is by far the best Star Trek series. It has so much heart.
This. I’d choose hang gliding.
I would want to do more than just observe; I’d want to participate. Instead of watching someone else find the packet of cigars, I would. Everyone could be the hero. Reenactors would have a ball, because they wouldn’t have to pay for and construct all the period-correct costumes and paraphernalia.
How about interviewing for that dream promotion?
Sure, you could, but it would be the same as doing so with the replicator, since they would be real food and drink. Light and forcefields don’t make for good food, and matter that would suddenly disappear when you leave is not good for you.
I would do some military simulations - be an archer during the Battle of Agincourt or a grunt landing on the Normandy beaches.
I think psychotherapists would use the holodeck for their patients. You could rehearse troubling scenarios, practice exposure therapy, help give people closure in relationships, and conduct role-playing exercises in ways that are impossible now.
