I recently found this goofy item: [Sammy Davis Jr. doing the “Mary Hartman” theme](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqHUPAaFIBk). Both the subject matter (a short lived soap opera sensation) and the disco/easy listening mix stamp this song as 1976 and only 1976. What other songs could only have been released at a specific time?

This has not dated well, it was very popular at the time

He did try to bring it up to date, but even the update can only be from one particular time, and that has aged far worse,

Actually it was Bernie Taupin who wrote both of those lyrics and this is the opposite of what the OP was seeking.

Karl Denver Trio – Wimoweh (1964)

Thanks for that one. I don’t remember that I have ever heard it before. That’s actually kind of an impressive performance. The song seems to owe a debt to the background riff of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by The Tokens.

[Two Way Freak](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xs__-kppro) about a girl who’s blowin’ up the guy’s two-way pager. I know they still exist but they were only popular enough to be sung about for a very small time between one-way pagers and cell phones.

“My Boyfriend Got a Beatle Haircut”. No awards for guessing that it’s from early 1964.

“Stop the War (The Cats Are Killin’ Themselves),” recorded by Wingy Manone and his orchestra in March 1941.

“Dear Mr. Godfrey” by Ruth Wallis, a 1953 song that satirized Arthur Godfrey’s on-air dismissal of Julius LaRosa.

Oh, and “I Want Eddie Fisher for Christmas” by Betty Johnson, from 1954.

Ironically, they had such a huge influence on the light rock of the 70s that I assumed that all of their stuff was either very late 60s or very early 70s until just a couple years ago.

Seeing as their first album was in 1964 and their last was in 1970, how exactly were you wrong?
