damn - I need to pay closer attention…I had one that beat aflatoxin by a factor of two (tetrodotoxin with an LD50 of 10 ug/kg), only to notice that Xenopus has already posted an even higher (lower ?) toxicity for palytoxin. Now I can’t figure out how to get out of the “Reply to Post” mode without sending a blank post.
What about Antimatter? Would Anti-Hydrogen count as an Element? If that stuff’s not as dangerous as these other things, it’s pretty close. Inject a microgram of Antimatter into your system, and you’ve got an explosion the equivalent of 43 kilos of TNT going off in your body. Of course, it’s not very toxic, but you could just as easily have, say, anti-VX gas, right? First it poisons you, then it blows you away.
android209, where did you see the info about maitotoxin? I’m interested.
radspam, not a big deal, but what you saw about palytoxin in Xenopus’s post was actually a quote from one of my posts. You should also note, as per the subsequent discussion between Xenopus and myself, that the LD50 for palytoxin was given for an injected delivery of palytoxin, which will have a potency increasing effect.
IIRC, I read it in ‘Classics in Total Synthesis’ by K. C. Nicolaou from the Scripps Institute. I don’t think this is a very widely circulating book (I do own a copy but it’s back in the UK). I’ve looked but can’t find LD50’s to compare for palytoxin/maitotoxin.
If anyone’s interested, you can see the structure of these and some other selected molecules here.
