They covered this in the movie, right before they jumped in the Hudson River at the very end - he’s “safe” when he’s with her, just like he was when they met as kids. “That was real? You mean that was you?!” It’s some magic mermaid thing - if he does go with her he can never return to land, so at first he doesn’t go, but then divers go in after her and he jumps in to save her. ---
